WALKING SIERRA MADRE……

The Social Side By Deanne Davis

“Everything you can imagine is real.” Pablo
Picasso

“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art
reminds you that you have one.” Stella Adler

And the 52nd Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair this
past weekend did exactly that! I hope you took
a few minutes to visit Memorial Park this past
weekend and revel in the wonderful, joyful art
surrounding us for just one glorious weekend!
There were so many things just needing to be
taken home. Van Noppen Glass took my breath
away. His Venetian-style glass sculptures of
bowls, vases, vegetables, flowers, and hanging
gardens had me reaching for my credit card!
David Van Noppen is a glass blower and he says,
“Learning to master glassblowing demands
patience, flexibility and a vision. For me, it
also captures the wonder of spontaneity, often
eclipsed in the hurried pace of everyday life.”
His pieces are beautiful to see and touch and,
even better, bring home! Take a look: www.

David Abernathy’s booth, “Grain in Focus”
featured lovely hand-mounted note cards, but
for us, his best items were the steel drums made
out of – you won’t believe this – propane tanks!
New, unused tanks are tuned to different scales
and sound exactly like the ones you’d hear in
Jamaica! They are beautifully painted and the
drum surface is the bottom of the tank. He had
one out in front of his space which said, “Please
Play Me!” and plenty of people did exactly that.
If you missed it, here’s his email: graininfocus@

My Art Fair companion, the art-appreciating
John, and I paused for a few minutes under the
trees in front of the meditation fountain to cool
off a bit, enjoy the sound of water flowing and
talk me down as far as buying too much more;
moved on, and were dazzled by Tina Curran’s
Art Quilts, really lovely piecework quilts, a skill
which I appreciate as I am completely without
the patience to deal with all those tiny pieces of
fabric and millions of tiny stitches!

Laura Saldarriaga’s water color paintings were
charming, Jennifur E Gilmore’s Upcycled
Glassware was delightful. Jennifur has gorgeous
etched wine glasses which are – you won’t
believe this either – made out of recycled wine
bottles. As Jennifur says, “Saving the world –
one wine bottle at a time!”

The Creative Arts Group’s kid’s project, giant
butterflies to decorate was a big success, the
Sierra Madre Garden Club had some really
cute pots and containers filled with various
succulents. We’re seeing those things more
and more now. We’ve got ‘em all over our yard
and really love the fact that you can break off a
piece, stick it in the ground and… voila! More
succulents!

John bought this year’s shirt, we enjoyed the
Celtic band, “Flowers of the Flock,” who were
playing down by the playground… and if you
haven’t seen that lately or taken your kids down
there to play, you need to! There are all sorts
of new playground structures, including a giant
fly teeter-totter. Peeking over the fence at the
Community Gardens, we kind of think that
some new folks need to take on a plot as a lot of
them are just sitting there growing a great crop
of weeds. Lots of others with tomatoes, though.

We saw amazingly soft chenille scarves,
Storyteller Keys necklaces, earrings, bracelets

– “What do they unlock? Make up your own
story.” Antique silverware and bronzeware
made into charming rings, bracelets and on
and on. So much unique pottery, ceramics,
paintings, photos, jewelry. The work of featured
artist, Beverly Jones, was enchanting. All I can
say is you had to be there. Overheard as we
were meandering out of the park, “Some things
you can look at and some things you just have
to touch!” He got that right! So many beautiful
things right there to touch and it all benefits the
Sierra Madre Public Library!
“Art is a collaboration between God and the
artist, and the less the artist does, the better!”
Andre Gide

SCOTT PHELPS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF
THE PUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION

Kim Kenne Elected Vice President; Tyron

Hampton Elected Clerk

The Board of Education of the Pasadena Unified School District
(PUSD) at its annual organizational meeting held Monday, May 5 voted
to elect Scott Phelps as board president for the 2014-2015 board year by
a 5-1 (abstain) vote. Also at the organizational meeting, Kim Kenne was
elected vice president and Tyron Hampton was elected clerk. The board
elects officers for one year terms.
"As Board President, I hope to foster greater understanding between district
staff and the community, which includes parents and the board,”
said Phelps. “We need to work together in the most productive and collaborative
way possible in order to achieve the goals we all have for the
education of children in Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre."
Scott Phelps served as coordinator of the Science, Engineering and
Technology Academy at John Muir High School and taught high school
chemistry, physics, planetary science (astronomy), physical science, and
math during the course of 15 years of teaching in PUSD schools before
being elected to the PUSD Board of Education in 2005. With his extensive
experience in developing hands-on science curricula and project-
based integrated curricula, Phelps was a member of the founding staffof Learning Works Charter School in Pasadena, teaching science labs.
Mr. Phelps is currently teaching mathematics and astronomy at the University
of La Verne, Mt. San Antonio College and Chaffey College and is
a consultant for external evaluations of federal and state school reform
grants received by school districts. Phelps lives in Northwest Pasadena
with his wife Lisa and their two children who attend PUSD’s McKinley
School.
“I look forward to working closely with Mr. Phelps addressing topics of
concern to the district and the community,” said PUSD Superintendent
Jon R. Gundry. “We have had a good working relationship that I know
will continue during his tenure as board president.”
Regular board meetings will continue to be held monthly. Meetings will
be on the 3rd or 4th Thursday of the month with an earlier start time of
5 p.m.
