SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2015 VOLUME 9 NO. 37 FORMER SIERRA MADRE PARAMEDIC MURDERED SIERRA MADRE FIRST RESPONDERS HONOR THEIR COLLEAGUES AND VICTIMS OF 911 By Susan Henderson Broadcast news carried the tragic story of the murder-suicide that took the life of LA County Sheriff’s Deputy Cecilia Hoschet. The story touched many in Sierra Madre, as Cecilia was a Sierra Madre Fire Department Paramedic from April, 2007 to December, 2014. “She was such a classy young woman, so caring and so professional”, said one Sierra Madre resident. Hoschet was part of the emergency team that responded to a 911 call at that resident’s home. The 32 year old mother of a 6 year old son had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for two years, having begun her career in a civilian capacity. She worked at the county’s inmate reception facility in downtown Los Angeles. According to news reports, “Deputies responded to “a woman screaming” call in the 5000 block of Crown Avenue, La Canada Flintridge.” Homicide detectives learned that the husband of the victim, a firefighter and 5 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, entered the residence and allegedly shot the female victim. The suspect then fled the scene and drove to Los Angeles County Fire Facility in Pacoima, where he killed himself. The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cecelia Hoschet served the Sierra Madre Community for almost 7 years. The ceremony began at 6:30 am on Friday morning. Photo by S. Henderson/MVNews ATTENTION SIERRA MADRE TEENAGERS Sierra Madre Rose Float Association is starting the Princess/Ambassador search early this year. This will give the Association and the Royal Court more time to be trained and outfitted for their speaking engagements and appearances in late November and December. The parade float will have room for 4 riders this year. The number of qualified applicants will determine the number of girls and/or boys on the Royal Court (the float riders). Please pick up applications from your school or download them from the SMRFA website (www.smrosefloat.org). Applications must be received by SMRFA by September 25th at the latest. PLEASE PARDON OUR NOISE Portions of the City’s water distribution system are 90 years old, and sadly the number of system leaks has increased dramatically in the last few weeks. It has always been the City’s policy to repair leaks as soon as we become aware of them; compliance with that policy is critical in this time of drought. As system leaks do not respect regular work schedules, it is not uncommon for Public Works staff to work late into the night or in the wee hours of the morning repairing leaks. While we will do all we can to keep the accompanying noise down, please understand, it is by its very nature noisy work. We apologize in advance for the disturbances we are creating. And PLEASE, if you see water coming out of the street pavement, call 355-1414 (PD Dispatch) and report it; you have spotted a leak! TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Please be aware that on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH, there will be intermittent traffic impacts in the following areas, at the following times: Highland Ave. & Auburn Ave. from 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. Kersting Ct. from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. SCARECROW’S LAMENT “IF I ONLY HAD A BRAIN.” THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO ORDER YOUR MEMORIAL BRICKS! By Donna Packer Hayworth D. Gleaning, created by Kara Schrum, has yearned for Scarlett O’Scare-ah, a comely maiden scarecrow, for as long as he can remember (approximately two weeks). Lovesick and forlorn, Hayworth finally screws up enough courage to profess his love to the object of his desire, and donning his best attire hastens on foot to pour out his heart to the beguiling Scarlett. Undaunted by the high garden wall separating him from his love, Hayworth climbs atop a lawn chair, swings one leg over the wall and startled by an approaching shuttle, promptly knocks over the chair leaving himself hanging from the gate. Hayworth was endowed with courage and heart but having no brain, was unable to extract himself from his embarrassing position and woo his lady love. Kara Shrum’s entry won Best Scarecrow Story and 2nd place for Adult Most Creative in Creative Arts Group’s 2014 Scarecrow Festival. Read Heyworth D.
