FRONT PAGE NEWS….THEN
AND
NOW!

By Meghan Malooly

In August of 2007
something amazinghappened! This paper
was first published
with a very special
business mentioned
on the front page,
Mary’s Market. Not
only can they say they
were on the front page
of the very first Mountain
Views News (nee
Observer), but they
are also the focus of
the newest MV News
column “The Sierra
Madre Spotlight''.

Mary’s Market is a little
gem tucked away at
the base of the mountains.
Originally built
in 1922 and named

“Spartan’s Meat and
Grocery”, it has evolved
into a household name
with the current owners Jenny and Heather at the captain's seat.

Mary’s Market is the sweetest little restaurant/coffee shop and it's
located right in the Sierra Madre Canyon. As a kid growing upin town everyone's favorite activities always involved stopping at
Mary’s for at least a minute. From the second you see it until the
moment you leave Mary’s Market has you enthralled. It's also a
wonderful place for selfies! (#MarysMarketCanyonCafe) .

Unfortunately, when the pandemic hit Mary’s had to temporarily
close its doors. But, they made it through 2020 and generouslyhelp support efforts to help others during that time. They have
re-opened and their hours are 8am-2pm Monday through Friday
and 8am-1pm Saturday and Sunday. Stop by and say hello while
you grab a delicious snack. There is even a very cool outdoor eating
area!

Says Jenny, “Mary’s has so many regulars! We feel so lucky to see so
many friendly faces every morning. They are like family . We even
have some menu items named after some of them " .

Congratulations Heather and Jenny! You survived the real Hunger
Games and always remember you have the support of the whole
town behind you. As for the rest of us, I don't know about you but
I will be making my way over to them as soon as possible to try
their B.L.A.S.T. sandwich. Our lovely mayor nominated this delicious
meal for L.A.’s best sandwich of the week and I’m pretty sure
it will complete my life.

Please try and stop by Mary’s Market and show your support! Stay
strong, act smart and help one another.

A word from the Author

Hello my Sierra Madre neighbors, it’s Meghan! I have morphed
from rambling on facebook to rambling in print! (at least for this
article, fingers crossed I come back!) I am starting a column once a
month focusing on well deserving Sierra Madre community businesses
and/or members. In this instance, “community” is not only
those that live in town but anyone with strong ties to Sierra Madre
(peo-ple who work/go to school here, grew up here, volunteer here,
etc,).

During the pandemic my heart was set to burst with the amount
of generosity and giving spirit our town has shown. So the point of
this column is that if you feel that you or someone you know has
done something inspiring please nominate them. Send your nominations
to: editor@mtnviewsnews.com and in the subject tupe:
Spotlight Nominee. Or, you can text or call me at 626-348-4940.

Well that's it for me folks! Meghan

Current owners of Mary's Market,
Heather Morrison and Jenny Kay
