That question was the topic of discussion for Sophia and her
hampster, Misty (pictured top left) at the 5th Annual Solution
Celebration held on Friday at Sierra Madre Elementary School.

The Science Fair is an introduction to “the experience of the
scientific process”, says Suzanne York, the Third Grade teacher
who came up with the idea five years ago. The students in her
class choose a question, research it and create a showcase that
displays their findings.

Once the displays are set up, other classroomms are invited to
view the projects, ask questions and have the exhibits explained
to them by the projects creator. The visiting students come
equipped with a ‘passport’ and as they stopped by each exhibit
they had their passport stamped. There were also many parents
that came to have provacative questions like, “How Can Erosion
Be Slowed” or learn about “Aliens” or “Dog Intelligence”.

One exhibit displayed the results of “An Examination of the
Plant Life In Bailey Canyon”. Another, discussed mold, complete
with old moldy bread for visualization.

The event was a wonderful interactive teaching, learning
experience for all who attended. Staff/MVNews

PASADENA COMMUNITY
FOUNDATION GRANTS TO PUSD
SURPASS ONE MILLION DOLLAR
MARK

Few organizations have given as much to support
public education in Pasadena as the Pasadena Community
Foundation (PCF). With this week’s announcement of a
new major grant of $24,140.00, the Pasadena Community
Foundation will have contributed, over its 57-year-existance,
a record-breaking $1,042.935 to the Pasadena Unified School
District (PUSD) which includes schools in Altadena and
Sierra Madre.

“At this time of decreased funding for public education,
PCF sees an even deeper need for community support of
the schools” says Jennifer DeVoll, Executive Director of the
Foundation. “We believe that people care passionately about
the education of our children and as the local community
foundation we respond by funding very carefully selected
projects such as this new multi-media program for
enhanced learning.” In reviewing the Foundation’s 36-year
support and long-standing commitment to PUSD, Pasadena
Superintendent of Schools, Edwin Diaz acknowledges
that “PCF has developed a clear understanding of and
commitment to our educational priorities. The Foundation
is one of our most valued community partners.”

This new major grant from the Foundation will allow
for the purchase of multi-media equipment to be used in
classrooms to support teaching and learning.

Among the exciting advantages made possible by this
innovative technology (l8 document cameras and LCD
projectors) is the opportunity for English and history
teachers to project streaming video content and documents
such as maps and historical texts right into their classrooms.
Research has shown that these tools are especially effective
in increasing student engagement and achievement for
students developing English Language skills. For English
language learners in middle school, teachers will be able to
utilize a new curriculum from HB National Geographic that
is rich in visual images. Schools scheduled to receive this
new technology are the Middle Schools at Blair, Marshall,
Wilson, Washington, Eliot, McKinley and Sierra Madre.

“Each grant that we have given to PUSD since the first
one in 1974 is important,” says Jennifer DeVoll, Executive
Director of the Pasadena Community Foundation. “But what
is more important is that year-after-year, the Foundation
has been a dependable charitable resource for programs
that promote learning and strengthen student achievement.
When it comes to supporting our public schools with well
targeted grants, the Pasadena Community Foundation is
committed for the long haul” says DeVoll.

Friends June 4th and 5th Book Sale

Ahhh, summer is upon us. No doubt weekend excursions
and vacation plans are in the works. So, where will your 2010
holiday take you? Up to the mountains, down to the beach
or safely tucked in your own backyard? Remember, the right
setting accompanied a cool drink and the right book will
provide the perfect getaway from the rigors of the other eleven
months of the year.

And especially in these difficult economic times cutting corners
will help make the vacation a pleasure. The Friends of the Sierra
Madre Library is here to help. Plan to visit the library at 440 W.
Sierra Madre Blvd for the June Best Used Book Sale on Friday,
June 4th from 3pm to 7pm, and Saturday June 5th from 10am to

Making Kids Safe In Sound The Focus Of A New Website Launched

What Every Parent Should Know About Their Child’s MP3 Use

As iPod or MP3 use among
children grows at an
unprecedented rate -- fueling
concerns that many are using
the technology unsafely -- the
American Speech-Language-
Hearing Association (ASHA) is
launching a new website (www.
listentoyourbuds.org) aimed
at empowering parents and
protecting children from noise-
induced hearing loss and other
communication difficulties.

The explosion of mobile media
and potential for misuse among
young people, something ASHA
has warned about for years,
has led others to raise warning
flags and call for more public
education. The most recent in
a series of studies by the Kaiser
Family Foundation about media
use among 8- to 18-year-olds
found that, in the past five years,
ownership of iPods and other
MP3 players rose dramatically,
from 18 to 76 percent. This statistic
is particularly alarming given
that in 2009 leading authorities
predicted a rise in hearing loss
nationally due to unsafe use of
personal audio devices.

It's not too late to curtail further
hearing damage in younger kids
just starting to use personal
audio technology and similar
devices. Equipped with many
new technical features, a new
design, and improved navigation,
www.listentoyourbuds.org
offers visitors access to the latest
information about safe use of these
devices, hearing loss prevention,
and the negative consequences
misuse and/or overuse can have
on a child.

The site also allows users to
participate by taking a personal
“pledge” to protect their hearing
by following three basic principles:

Keep the volume down. A good
guide is half volume. If someone
else can hear the music, it's too
loud.

 Limit listening time. Give your
hearing “quiet breaks.” Damage
can occur after just four songs.

 Watch for warning signs of
hearing loss.

The site features an up-to-date
“Buds” concert calendar of events,
designated sections for parents
and educators, and access to
other national organizations that
help get the "Buds" safe listening
message to parents, educators,
and children. Bookmarking
and social media tags are also
embedded throughout the site so
that visitors can share “Listen to
Your Buds” news and information
with others on sites like Facebook,
Twitter, MySpace, and Del.icio.us.

In the coming months, ASHA will
be introducing new site features
including downloadable at-home
educational resources for families
and additional multimedia.

About the American Speech-
Language-Hearing Association

ASHA is the national professional,
scientific, and credentialing
association for more than
140,000 audiologists, speech-
language pathologists, and
speech, language, and hearing
scientists. Audiologists specialize
in preventing and assessing
hearing and balance disorders
as well as providing audiologic
treatment including hearing aids.
Speech-language pathologists
identify, assess, and treat speech
and language problems including
swallowing disorders.
