The Alverno Class of 2010 lets loose after the ceremony

Family and friends of the Alverno High
School graduating class of 2010 gathered
on the school’s terrace to celebrate the
achievements of these young women.
The graduates’ college plans range from
the major campuses of the universities of
California to a Historically Black College
in the southeastern United States, to small,
private eastern schools and some of our best
local campuses.

Los Angeles County Deputy Public
Defender Alexandra McConnell, Alverno
Class of 1999, was commencement speaker.
She thanked Alverno for empowering her to
discover her own strength and the passions
that have spurred her to make a career in
the law. “Strength is standing up for what
you believe in, even if it is not the most
popular point of view. Strength is embodied
in each and every one of you,” she told the
graduates. “The best advice I can give you is
figure out what you’re passionate about, and
do that for the rest of your life. Some people
believe that a life is measured by how much
money you have, or how many people you
know; I disagree. I believe that life is about
how much love you have, and what you do
with that love.”

The Alverno Class of 2010 has already
revealed one of its passions: service to
others. The 57 members of the class gave
more than 18,500 hours to service to others
over their four years of high school.

The members of the Class of 2010 are:
Safiya Al-Sarraf, Amelia Alvarado, Briana
Alvarado, Julie Bailey, Chelsea Bejjani,
Chelsea Bond, Mariel Briones, Gabrielle
Bruno, Melody Bueno, Dominique Campos,
Jessica Capra, Lena Carino, Chelsea Cubas,
Gina Dance, Kelsey Dunn, Bethany
Dwyer, Lana El-Farra, Djanelle Estacion,
Xiomara Garza, Deandra Gomes, Sage
Alossi-Grobes, Megan Hofilena, Katherine
Howard, Bassant Ibrahim, Rebecca Iraheta,
Cheryl Iwamoto, Isabella Jusay, Jenae
Kitaguchi, Gabriella Legaspi, Eva Little,
Melissa Long, Courtney Lynn, Meghan
Malooly, Mia Mediano, Melissa Miranda,
Shelby Mitchell, Chanel Mucci, Annemarie
Norton, Karen Opara, Angelina Pellegrino,
Sara Pfeiffer, Emily Purnell, Jasmine Rao,
Anya Richards, Brenna Robinson, Lillya
Roldan, Arriel Sanchez, Lauren Sanchez,
Elise Torres, Jordan Turner, Morgan Turner,
Marlies Urbauer, Victoria Vega, Taylore
Weldon, Sydney Wikkeling-Marotta.

Alverno High School is the independent,
Catholic, college-prep high school for girls
in Sierra Madre. Its college-prep curriculum
and emphasis on empowering young
women attracts students from public and
private schools throughout the San Gabriel
Valley. The school will celebrate the 50th
anniversary of preparing young women for
the future with a series of exciting events
during the 2010-2011 school year.

La Salle’s Michael Perry Places Third in State Track Meet

Pasadena, CA - Senior Michael Perry took third in
the long jump Saturday, June 5, at the California State
Championships for Track & Field at Buchanan High
School in Clovis, CA.

Perry’s top mark of 23’- 2.5” bettered his own school
record by almost six inches. His third place finish
represents the highest finish in school history for La
Salle Track & Field athletes. Perry’s accomplishment in
the long jump places him and La Salle third out of 1,442
member high schools in the state CIF. Four of Perry’s
jumps at State Finals equaled or bettered his previous
personal record of 22 feet 8.75 inches, set last week at
the Southern Section Masters. His jump series was 22’-
10.25”, 23’-2.5”, 21’-0.75”, 21’-5.75”, 22’-8.75”, 22’-9.5”.
Going into State Prelims, Perry had the 14th best mark
out of the 30 jumpers who qualified. He moved into the
9th spot after prelims, and then up to the 3rd spot after
finals. He was the only long jumper in the finals who
improved upon his previous marks and set a personal
best. Complete results for the long jump and all the
Track & Field events at the State Championships can be

Hillsides Special Education School Celebrates
Six Graduates

(PASADENA, CA)--Graduations can be
viewed as the end of a major milestone
for students. Graduations can also
be viewed as the beginning of a new
journey. For graduates at Hillsides
Education Center, graduation is a
moment to reflect on the previous years
of challenges and accomplishments,
while looking toward a future that can
be bright, filled with hope, and success.

Hillsides Education Center, a special
education school in Pasadena serving
students who have learning disabilities
or severe emotional disturbances, held
its commencement ceremony on June
22. Teachers and staff briefly introduced
the graduates, sharing stories about each
one of them, expounding on their talents
and abilities, the smiles that greeted
everyone and the confidence and self-
expression they found throughout the
years.

 “What is unique about our
graduations is that we have six graduates
and six valedictorian speeches,” said Jay
Bechtol, director of Hillsides Education
Center. “We are extremely proud of each
student and impressed with what each
one has to say.”

Each graduate approached the podium and thanked someone for helping them throughout
the years, whether it was providing comfort, guidance or education. One young girl, who
also lives at Hillsides, the foster care children’s charity, acknowledged that she came to the
residential facility with many challenges and is leaving with many accomplishments. She
thanked the professional staff for helping her get to where she is now—proud of whom she
has become and the prospect of where she is going.

Others thanked teachers for simply being there when they needed someone to talk to, while
others thanked the charity’s caregivers for their patience, love, and for having a father figure.

“Graduation is a wonderful day at Hillsides, in particular for all the staff at Hillsides
Education Center, who dedicate year after year to working with our students in providing
them a quality education,” said Joseph M. Costa, Hillsides Chief Executive Officer. “We
couldn’t be prouder of them and are excited about their future. Hillsides will continue to
care and be a supportive community for them and we are confident of their future success.”

Bechtol shared with the audience that each graduate is enrolled in college or a vocational
training program, a major accomplishment for each students and for the special education
school in Program.
