David Wheatley In Concert

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Wednesday, October 13, 2010 - 12:45 p.m.

by Deanne Davis

Just a few minutes away by car or Metrolink is an absolutely astonishingly beautiful edifice: Cathedral of Our
Lady of the Angels. Like most of you, I've been planning for several years to go take a look at it. Of course, life
being what it is, that hasn't happened. But now, I've got a reason! Every Wednesday, The Cathedral of Our Lady
of the Angels presents a free organ concert. Yes, free! One of my very favorite words. These concerts feature
the finest musicians in our area and coming up on October 13th is one of the Southland's premiere organists,
David Wheatley. A few of the selections Mr. Wheatley will be presenting include: Fugue in G Minor (J.S.
Bach); Pavanne (Gabriel Faure); Symphony No, 5 Finale (Beethoven) {transcribed by Wheatley from the Franz
Liszt transcription for piano and the orchestral score}; Ave Maria (Franz Schubert) sung by 11 year old guest
soprano, Breanna Flores. There will also be original compositions
by Mr. Wheatley, including his Toccata in A Minor. Not only is
Mr. Wheatley an accomplished musician/composer, but his
delivery and comments about the music are always charming
and instructive.

David has recently completed four concerts as part of the "Make
Music a Part of Your Life" series at First Christian Church of
North Hollywood, affording him the opportunity to present
a number of his original works, in addition to some exceptional
classical pieces. David attended the University of Toronto and the
Royal Conservatory of Music where he is an Associate in Piano
and Pipe Organ Performance. He holds the Bachelor of Music
Degree in Composition from the University of North Texas. He
has a Master of Music Degree in Composition from the University
of Southern California where he also founded and directed the
Scoring for Motion Pictures Program for five years. He has
toured with Helmut Rilling, the Gaechinger Cantorei and
the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra performing at the
organ for the Mass in B Minor (J.S. Bach). At the piano, David
recorded the Five Pieces for AOrchestra (Arnold Schoenberg)
with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He also played
the historic Fox Studios pipe organ on the soundtrack for
Star Trek: The Motion Picture and has recorded on many other
soundtracks as pianis and organist.

So! An accomplished artist at the instrument.... and what an instrument it is! The pipe organ at Our Lady
of the Angels was commissioned from Dobson Pipe Organ Builders of Lake City, Iowa. It is the 89th largest
pipe organ in North America and the 143rd in the world! The top of the organ case is 85 feet from the floor,
has one hundred and five stops and a total of six thousand nineteen pipes, including some vintage pipes from
the Cathedral of St. Vibiana. The pipes are arranged in six divisions: Great, Swell, Positive, Solo, Fanfare and
Pedal. Mr. Wheatley will profoundly use them all! Originally built in 1929, the organ was rebuilt in 1988.
The forty-two ton organ is supported on a steel structure built into the wall and three blowers, located in the
basement, totaling twenty-seven horsepower supply the organ with wind pressure ranging from five to twenty
inches water column. Now, that's big! Needless to say, all this power generates enough sound to completely
fill the cathedral, not to mention that it makes the room vibrate, causing the assembly to not only HEAR the
music, but to FEEL it, making the experience all the more powerful, emotionally as well as physically.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles is located on Temple, between Grand and Hill Streets in downtown Los
Angeles (right off the 101 freeway). The entrance to the parking structure is located off both Temple and Hill
Streets. Validated parking is available for 90 minutes, which will easily cover the concert . The Metro Gold
Line connects from Pasadena to Union Station and then, via the Red Line, to the Cathedral. The Cathedral
Plaza Cafe, which opens onto a tree-shaded patio is available for lunch or snacks. A spacious gift shop welcomes
browsing and is a delightful shopping opportunity. For information/directions, call (213) 680-5200.

CONSTRUCTION BLITZ!

Saturday, November 6,

10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Have you worked on the
construction crew before? Or
have you ever wondered how a
Rose Parade float is built? We
need you! Come join us Saturday,
November 6 from 10 a.m. - 5:00
p.m. at the Barn for a “Construction
Blitz”!

For those of you who have worked
on the construction crew before,
there will be a list of projects ready
to go, awaiting your expertise.

Sierra Madre is also eager to
welcome new members to our
construction crew. Whether
you have years of welding and
mechanical experience or none at
all, we hope you’ll join us to see if
float-building is the hobby for you.
Try your hand at creating some of
the finishing touches for the float.
We will be bending pencil steel and
welding it into the shape of palm
fronds, bougainvillea vines and
citrus trees. You might also pitch
in and help to prepare the float
for flowers by covering it in foam.
Everyone will have an opportunity
to see the domes mounted on
the mission bell towers. Once the
domes are in place, we’ll drive
the float outside the barn and test
the hydraulic lift mechanism that
will raise the towers 30 feet in the
air. We’ll also test the animation
systems that operate a dozen giant
butterflies and a burro-drawn cart.
Sierra Madre is committed to
creating a fun, family-friendly
environment where all are
welcome. With an all-volunteer
crew Sierra Madre has built five
award-winning floats in a row.
We hope you’ll join us Saturday,
November 6 and help us keep up
the good work.
