THE JOY OF YOGA
LOOKING UP
HYPNOSIS: An Amazing Tool
By Carole Weeks, Certified Master Hypnotist
Bright Future Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a natural state. We all have a tendency to go in and
out of this state regularly. For example, the last thirty minutes
before going to sleep at night is akin to hypnosis. Or when
you are watching an especially engaging movie or reading an
interesting book, you are in hypnosis, and you lose sense of time.
Hypnotherapy is a means to access this state to change your life
in the direction you choose.
Each of us creates a life script as we grow up. This life script can
be adjusted under hypnosis. In addition, behavior change and
elimination of negative habits are goals of hypnosis. The client is in control of the change
process, and the hypnotherapist functions as a facilitator suggesting to the client under
hypnosis what the client has said they want to change in their life. While out of hypnosis,
the behavior issue is explained to the client. A strategy for change is created, and the
hypnotherapist helps the client to become receptive to the new strategy while in hypnosis.
Some people wonder if they can be hypnotized. After the session, people even ask if they have
been hypnotized. All of us are suggestible to hypnosis but there is a range of suggestibility.
Modern research shows that the ability to be hypnotized is correlated with concentration,
focus, and relaxation. In certain cases, hypnotherapy is used in conjunction with traditional
medical care as an adjunct tool to support healing or behavior change. Some of the most
common areas of treatment include: weight loss, smoking cessation, pain management,
insomnia, and fears/phobias. There is no end to concerns that can be addressed by the use of
hypnosis. The typical client is someone who wants to change or improve something in their
life.
In today’s world, clients come into the office overloaded with the cares and stresses of their
lives. The difference in demeanor and emotions in a client at the end of a hypnotherapy
session never ceases to amaze me. Everyone is relaxed and stress free after the session. Some
also appear happier, ready to take on the world. I highly recommend hypnotherapy to
anyone wanting to improve their life experience or to those with goals to reach when will
power is not enough.

A friend of mine came back from vacation and was meeting me for
lunch. “So how was your trip,” I asked, “what did you do?” “Excellent!”
she replied. “I spent the whole trip looking up”. Then she added:
“cities look so much different when you look up. It’s amazing what
you can discover. I was looking at all these places I already knew, but
from another perspective, and it was breathtaking.”
This got me thinking that we should occasionally extend this point of view to our lives. Trying
to see our own existence from a different vantage point, and in the process getting a sight
of the beauty of it and its many facets.
We trace a path for our lives. We have an overall direction, goals set along the road, and we
follow that road, looking ahead, hopefully on track. That’s good. That’s how it’s supposed to
be. But sometimes we need to catch a glimpse of what’s above in order to clearly see what’s
ahead. Because our daily life becomes all too familiar. We get bored with it. We may even feel
we’ve lost our grip on it. We sigh and think “I wish there was something more...”
Well it’s already there. Look up and get some inspiration. Look at your life’s overall pattern,
and see that it makes an awesome picture ; appreciate its beauty and its uniqueness, from the
shiny, bright spots down to the dimmed, darker areas. And if you’re thinking “yeah, sure,
that’s nice but... just exactly how do I do that?”, I have a suggestion. Come to yoga. Learn
from it. From your mat, you’ll see yourself, and those around you, in a new light.
From downward dog or half moon or tree pose - just to name a few - can you see how your
immediate world looks different now? Yet it’s the same world, just seen from a fresh viewpoint.
Sometimes this is all we need: a fresh look on something, be it yourself, your life or
the world around you. Try it. It’s not just different, it is also uplifting and exhilarating. And
definitely not boring...
