ST. RITA ELEMENTARY
SPEECH TEAM SHINES AT
YEAR-END TOURNAMENT
Sierra Madre, CA, The Elementary Speech Team
closed out the year with a strong showing at the
St. Rita Elementary Speech & Debate Invitational
Tournament last week. Dominating in Duo
Interpretation, the teams of Hillary Howard and
Emerson Gohrick, Cassandra Pichardo and Charlotte
Hardy, Alex De La Mora and Jade Gustafson, and
Giana Froio and Tess Fundter finished first through
fourth respectively. Nicolas Froio and Robert
Nardoni placed sixth in their first tournament and
Anna Link took first place in Poetry. The team had
a strong showing in Storytelling as well with Erin
Simone taking third place, Isabella Zuniga, fourth
place, Catherine Mansour, fifth place, and Catherine
Bauer, Natalie Bax and Mark Challita finishing in the
top ten.
Both the Elementary and Varsity Speech and Debate
teams from St. Rita’s competed in six tournaments
this year and came away with more than 20 trophies and medals for their outstanding efforts in the events of Storytelling, Original
Oratory, Impromptu Speaking, and Duo, Thematic, Dramatic, Poetry, Humorous and Prose Interpretations.
The Speech and Debate participants from St. Rita are clearly on a road to success. A recent Wall Street Journal study regarding
high school students found that “dedicated participation in drama and debate has significantly increased the success rate of college
applicants by more than 60% compared with the rest of the pool…” It also cited that “those students have a 22% to 30% higher
acceptance rate at top tier colleges.”
St. Rita School, located at 322 N. Baldwin Ave. in Sierra Madre, is a Catholic parish school ranked fourth in the Los Angeles Diocese,
with a focus on faith, stewardship and academic excellence. For more information, call (626) 355-6114.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS
After seeing
Abrams’ first Star Trek in
2009, I was eager to see
what he would do next
with the series. I am proud
to say that ‘Into Darkness’
is a triumph.
Starfleet is facing
a threat unlike any it has
seen before: an enemy
from within. James T.
Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock
(Zachary Quinto) and
Commander Uhura (Zoe
Saldana) now face what
could be their greatest
fight ever in the form of
John Harrison (Benedict
Cumberbatch). As they
chase him to the Klingon
home world, however, they
discover that his he is more
than meets the eye and that
he may spell the end for not only Starfleet, but the galaxy as well.
Abrams brings back everything that worked in ‘Star Trek’,
the fast plot, interesting character development, and quite a bit
of humor, and puts all of it on a grander scale. Everything about
this movie feels bigger, from the Enterprise itself to the immense
threat it and its crew face.
We’d like
to hear
from you!
