THE JOY OF YOGA

WITHDRAW FROM THE
TEMPTATION?

HOW TO AVOID GAS AND
BLOATING WITH FOOD COMBINING

 We speak a lot
about the senses in
yoga. The 5 senses
of sound, sight,
touch, taste and
smell direct our
lives in so many
ways. We need
these senses to provide
us with vital
information. If one of them is not available the
others are heightened to compensate. They are
also our enjoyment centers. But most of us have
learned to become slaves to them. Temptation
stems from repeated use of a certain sense that
provides a benefit or stimulant. It can actually
be good or bad, it’s the repetition that fuels our
addictions. When we have no idea what we are
slaves to, our senses take over and create havoc.
Then we bounce form one sensory fulfillment
to another. We bounce from hunger, to sex, to
drink, to visual and audio stimulation with out a
thought. These de-sires drive our lives. We can
just be sitting there and yet thinking about our
next meal or addicted to Facebook.

The wise yogis decided to retreat from the senses
and the more you practice re-treat – the easier
it gets. I mean, who is in charge here You or
your sens-es? You should be in charge, not your
cravings. This is not like dieting. Diet-ing is just
redirecting. The sensory stimulation addiction
just shifts somewhere else. You need to develop
awareness of the inner you and the driven by
sens-es you. After some practice at this, you can
let your senses help you decided what is best for
you. But that is with refinement, not “I want this
and that and this.”

Temptation creates more temptation and pretty
soon – ya gotta have it.

The practice of discipline and withdrawing from
the senses gives us heightened appreciation of
the senses. It gives us the power of our own
choice. The phys-ical discipline of yoga is the
first step. If we crave pizza and coke and give in
3 days a week, our practice will suffer. Focusing
on the physical body in pos-tures can help us see
the temptation when it rises. Continued study
can help us break patterns and get control. Next
time you hear the teacher say “Pratyahara”,
you will know – withdrawal of the senses. It is
another of the eight limbs of yoga.

Yesterday a good friend asked me about food combining and if I could
recommend any books that explained it well. So I thought I would give
you a brief idea of what food combining is and how it can work for or
against you. The first thing you need to know is that all foods require
different amounts of time to digest and move though our system. Natalia
Rose author of the” Raw food Detox Diet” calls easily digest foods quick
exit foods. The next thing you need to know is that eating certain food
combinations can hinder digestion. If you suffer from gas or bloating
after meals you may want to give food combining a try.

One of the secrets of establishing good health as well as maintaining
weigh loss is to have a properly functioning digestive system. This means
that you are able to absorb the maximum amount of nutrients, proteins
and enzymes from your food. When this is accomplished it can prevent
bloating, burping, gas and even indigestion. When done properly, food
combining will make this all possible.

Fruits digest faster than any other food. Next in line would be nonstarching
vegetables including herbs, nuts, seed, and olive and seed oils. The third group is your
grains (products made from grains), sugars and starchy vegetables like corn on the cob. The foods
that digest slowest are meats, dairy and fish.

1. Fruits (fresh fruits that is... cooked fruits take a little longer and dried fruits even longer still) take
approximately 30 minutes to exit the stomach. Try to eat fruits first thing in the morning or 3 hours
after a meal.

2. All non-starch vegetables may be
eaten with flesh dishes.

3. All vegetables may be eaten with
starches.

This is very basic description of food
combining. You can get much more
detail and fine tune what you eat but
this is a quick primer for those just
starting with food combining. What
I take away from this is that the
traditional meal I grew up on of meat, potatoes, vegetables and a raw lettuce salad is hard on the
digestive system. A better meal would leave out the potatoes…or keep the potatoes and eliminate
the meat.

28 DAY HEALTH TRANSFORMATION

by Dennis R. Buckley, D.C.

Whether you are just looking to improve and protect your health,
or you have a serious condition that threatens your ability to
live and function, there is a foundation that must be in place to
support living well or recovering.

The foundation of health is based on four main areas being maintained.

1. Regular exercise and movement including stretching.

2. Proper nutrition to fuel your body.

3. Proper and sufficient rest to help your body heal and regenerate.

4. A fully functional spine and nervous system to control and coordinate all of your body’s
functions.

Many people are looking for the ‘next best thing’ without addressing or fortifying the foundation.
Promises are made all the time that this lotion, notion, product or pill will take you to the promise
land of health.

Many people are suffering in many ways due to the fact that they have ignored taking care of their
foundation. It is estimated that 70% of the problems people go to the doctor for are related to
lifestyle therefore preventable because they have cracks in the foundation.

So what has happened is that their train has come off the tracks as they are trying to leave the
station on their journey. They are stuck.

The 28 day health transformation is simplistic in its design to get your train back on the tracks so
it can leave the station. It shores up your foundation on which all health and healing is based.

For 28 days, 4 weeks you are going to give your body a break and nourish it with activities to
address strengthening your foundation.

For exercise, it includes movement and mobility on a daily basis. Nutrition wise you stop putting
toxic stuff in your body and give your digestive track a break. When you exercise regularly and eat
healthy great sleep is a by-product as your body detoxifies and repairs itself. Posture awareness and
evaluation using chiropractic, massage, yoga, core training all help maintain the frame and allows
the nervous system to flow and function without interference.

The 28 day health transformation has been tested and since it is simple and you don’t have to buy
any pills or equipment the question is asked, “What makes this program so special?” The answer is
YOU!

You are the main factor of whether it works or not. You must change. You must get leverage on
yourself to get back on track and set a new direction for your life. You must walk, you must do
the stretching, you must make the choices and discipline yourself.

28 days is not a long time but can put you on course to build a foundation that you can then build
on to sustain and protect your health for a 100 years.
