Keeping children engaged during summer vacation is always a
challenge for parents. However, the Sierra Madre Library’s summer
reading program lent a helping hand by offering the Summer Reading
Program. Youth were divided into 4 categories: Beginners, Readers,
Challengers and Teens.
The program also engaged 32 teen volunteers to assist with the
program who served a total of 411 hours.
Above, Challenger winner Hadley Damir read a total of 277 hours
over the summer and right, Teen winner Helena proudly displays her

BOSCO TECH TO HOST FREE COLLEGE FAIR ON SEPT. 30
More than 100 Colleges and Universities Scheduled to Appear
SACRAMENTO - President Barack Obama will take his rightful place
in California textbooks under legislation signed today by Governor
Jerry Brown. AB 1912 authored by Assemblymember Chris Holden
(D-Pasadena), will be the first step toward acknowledging President
Obama’s legacy for generations to come. The measure enjoyed
overwhelming, bi-partisan support as it made its way through the
legislative process this year.
“I am very grateful to Governor Brown for signing this important
legislation and to the lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who agreed
that this presidency should not be relegated to a footnote in textbooks,”
said Assemblymember Holden. “We want to make sure that future
generations understand that the election of our nation’s first African
American President was a historic step in the effort towards equality
and that previous elections involved intimidation and violence that
prevented millions of African-Americans from voting.”
AB 1912 asks the State Board of Education and the Instructional
Quality Commission to include the significance of President Barack
Obama’s election in the state’s history and social science standards
for grades seven to twelve. The state’s history-social science standards
haven’t been revised in nine years due largely to the state’s fiscal crisis.
The next review and adoption of instructional materials will not take
place until the 2015-2016 school year.
“Just 145 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation,
and only a generation removed from the civil rights struggles, President
Obama’s election represented the moment when all things seemed
possible,” concluded Holden.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
IF I STAY REVIEW
Teen romance films seem to
be getting sadder and sadder,
and ‘If I Stay’ is definitely
part of that trend. It
introduces you to very likable
characters, pushes them into
tough and sometimes cruel
situations, and lets you see
their struggles.
However, what makes this
film different is its ending.
Mia Hall (Chloe Grace
Moretz) is not used to much
attention from boys, let alone
the popular rocker type, like
Adam (Jamie Blackley).
But when the two meet,
sparks fly, hormones rage,
and a massively devastating
car accident interrupts the
young love affair.
‘If I Stay’ is a truly sad movie; you just feel bad for every character
at some point. In many ways it breaks out of the teen romance genre
and becomes a very intriguing, dramatic character study on the
teens who start out as unpopular and become popular. It is a rough
yet worthwhile journey.
