Pasadena, CA --- Continuing its 2014-2015 series of parent education
seminars, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) presents
Ready. Set. Kindergarten!, an informative and interactive session
to help parents of prospective kindergarteners prepare for the next
school year. Presented by PUSD early childhood education teachers,
the seminars include information on how to prepare young students
for the first day of kindergarten, an introduction to the kindergarten
curriculum, and fun, interactive learning activities for families.
The event will take place Tuesday, October 28 at 9 a.m. at Willard
Elementary School in Southeast Pasadena.
To be eligible for kindergarten in PUSD, a child must turn five
years old by Sept. 1, 2015. Transitional kindergarten, providing age
appropriate instruction to students born later in the year before
they progress to a traditional kindergarten class, is also offered for
children who turn five between September 2, 2015 and December 2,
2015.
Parents and guardians can begin registering incoming
kindergarten students by visiting their local PUSD campus starting
early 2015. Parents can also select any PUSD elementary school with
space available through the district’s Open Enrollment process that
begins in January 2015. Parents are welcome to visit and tour PUSD
schools throughout the year. Call schools for schedules.
Parent education seminars are sponsored by PUSD’s Family
Resource Center, which supports parents, teachers and staff
in building partnerships for student achievement. For more
information and for other parent education opportunities, visit
www.pusd.us and click on Families.

PASADENA UNIFIED ISSUES STATEMENT ON SCHOOL
SHOOTING IN WASHINGTON STATE
Pasadena, CA – Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Interim
Superintendent Dr. Brian McDonald issued the following statement
regarding the shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in
Washington State today:
“The entire Pasadena Unified family is deeply disturbed by the
tragedy that occurred in Marysville, Washington today. Our
thoughts and prayers are with the families of Marysville-Pilchuck
High School.”
“The safety of our students is the top priority at PUSD. We take
many precautions to ensure that students remain safe while at
school. All schools have school safety plans that detail the proper
response to a variety of emergency scenarios. The district has a
zero tolerance policy regarding weapons on campus. PUSD can
also activate its emergency operations center at a moment’s notice
to coordinate emergency response efforts. We are fortunate to
have a strong partnership with the Pasadena Police Department,
Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and the Sierra Madre Police
Department to provide immediate assistance should any problems
arise.”
“Crisis counseling and support is available to PUSD students in
the wake of this incident in Washington. We also encourage staff
and principals to re-familiarize themselves with emergency and
security policies in light of this shooting.” Finally, it is important
that if staff or students see something such as bullying or the threat
of violent behavior they should say something. Information can
be anonymously sent to the district by texting “tip PUSD” and a
description of the concerning issue to 888777.
“To keep people informed in an emergency, the district is able to
send critical information via text message. Text PUSD to 888777 to
receive this service from the district.”
“PUSD recognizes the tremendous trust that parents place in
us when they send their children to school each day. We take this
responsibility very seriously. I want to reassure students and parents
that our schools are safe.”
“Please join me and the staff and students of the district by offering
our condolences to those affected by this tragedy.”

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
GONE GIRL REVIEW
This movie had me interested from
the first trailer. It looked dark,
intriguing, and the story, unlike so
many other mystery movies, was
not cliché or simplistic. However,
as more and more trailers were
released, that intrigue was lost,
due to the fact that more and more
of the story was being shown. So,
when I walked into the theater, I
thought I had everything worked
out. I was so very, very wrong.
Nick (Ben Affleck) and Amy
Dunne (Rosamund Pike) are a
troubled couple. Each fight grows
increasingly intense and, as their
wedding anniversary approaches,
tempers flare beyond anything imaginable. And, when Nick returns
home on the day of their anniversary, he finds his wife missing and
his life begins to disintegrate around him.
“Gone Girl” is like a tsunami. It sneaks up on you, building and
building until it becomes so massive that you cannot escape its path.
It is interesting, yet predictable (in some ways), funny, yet disturbing.
It may leave you scarred, it may not even phase you. But, undeniably,
“Gone Girl” will make you question the true intentions of the people
you know and everything that is going on in the world around you.
