AROUND SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

STURTEVANT CAMP’S HIKE INTO HISTORY

“What’s Going On?”

News and Views from Joan Schmidt

We are really excited about our Hike into History
– Sturtevant Camp scheduled this coming Sunday.
We have over 100 people that have RSVP’d. And,
as such, I want to give ya’ll some last minute
information:

- Car pool, car pool, car pool!!! As most of you
know, the gate at the bottom of the hill opens at
6:00 am. Luckily the Sunday crowd is a later crowd
and so the parking lots do not fill up until closer to
7:30 with parking down the road beginning after
that. But, with this crowd, they will fill up earlier.
The dirt lot at Adams’ Pack Station will open at
6:45 am for this special event parking ($10). We can
hold 32 cars. If you can park down the road and
shuttle up that would be a great help.

- We will meet at the pack station by 7:30. I will
talk a little about our fundraiser for the Camp and
donations are MORE THAN WELCOME! Right
now, if 250 people gave only $100 each we would
make our goal. Please bring cash, checks made out
to Friends of the San Gabriels, or we can take credit
cards at the pack station. If you want to wait until
you see what we are trying to save, we will also be
taking donations up at the Camp. Remember that
we have great incentives for those of you that want
to and can donate at greater levels. Including hosted
stays at the camp, adopting a cabin, naming a cabin,
etc. Check out www.friendsofthesangabriels.org.

- We will have t-shirts for sale at $10.00.

- With this many people, we will have leaders
taking groups of people of 10-20 out in waves so
that the trail does not get overly crowded. Also,
there are different levels of hiking so we will have
groups that are faster, slower, and everything in
between.

- I will be leading the pack train. Anyone is
welcome to walk along at donkey pace with us.

- Once we get to camp, we will take a tour of the
camp and the cabins.

- We will have the makings (self-serve) for tortilla
roll-ups including cheese, meats, condiments. For
those of you who want to avoid gluten, we will have
lettuce for the roll-ups. Also chips and bottled
water.

- To encourage you to come back to the pack station
for food and beer (or other drinks), I will hand out
10% off coupons up at the Camp. Deb Burgess

THERE’S MORE TO LIBRARIES

THAN BOOKS!

Don’t get me
wrong. I LOVE
books; reading
is a passion. As
a child, Mom
always took me
to the Library;
I even played “Library” more than “School”. When
I taught, my classroom had its own library-shelves
laden with books in all subject areas to supplement
lessons, for further research, or just enjoyment.

After moving to Monrovia in 1987, I used ALL
our libraries. Monrovia Library had great juvenile
bios which helped in my daughter’s science project.
Live Oak Library’s video section provided great
videos like Phantom Toll Booth, Watership Down,
Tom Sawyer, The Miracle Worker and Flicka, shown
after my class read the selection in our Literature
Book. In Ancient History after completing the
Chapter, I not only provided film strips, but
videos on Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and
Ancient Rome from the Baldwin Park Library. For
Language Arts, my class viewed Duarte Library’s
“No Grapes” about Caesar Chavez and his battle
against harmful pesticides used in the Central
Valley. Then they wrote persuasive paragraphs to
boycott grapes!

I am retired and the years have flown by,
but I am truly amazed at the great programs
and equipment available at ALL local libraries.
Yesterday my daughter and I went to the Duarte
Library to view the great Sherlock Holmes display
provided by Alan Heller and were not disappointed
by the periodicals, books, video, microscope, hats,
pictures, a nutcracker and more!

Duarte Library has After School Family Library
Club, an afternoon of stories, projects and art
activities on Tuesdays at 4:00pm for school age
children and their families. January 27’s topic is
Chinese New Year; February 3, Black History;
February 10, Make A Valentine; February
17, Legos; February 24, Dr. Seuss. Preschool
Storytime is every Friday, 11:15am-12:00pm,
January 9-February 27, 2015. 1-2-3 Play with
Me, Parent-Child Workshops are every Monday,
11:00am-12:15 pm, March 2-March 30, 2015.
Parents and Caregivers spend one-on-one time
with their children-babies up to 3-1/2 years old.
Older children, ages 11-18, can learn computer
programming in Hour of Code on Wednesdays,
February 25 and March 2015, 4:00pm-5:00pm.
There is SAT/ACT TEST PREP-Saturday January
31, 2015, 11:30am-3:30pm. Teens ages 13-18 are
invited to attend the FREE practice exams. Space is
limited, so please call 626-358-1865 to register. On
Saturday, February 7, at 2pm, there will a program
highlighting the many contributions of Black
Americans. This free event for the family includes
light refreshments. The Duarte Library is at 1301
Buena Vista St. (626)358-1865.

Upcoming events/programs at the Live Oak
Library include Toddler Storytime at 11:15 am,
Monday, January 26, February 2 and 9. Adventure
Storytime for grades K-4 , 3:30-4:30 pm Tuesday,
January 27, February 3 and February 10. Game
Day which includes board games and video games
will be on February 4 from 5:00-7:00pm. Saturday,
February 28th has Songs of American Heroes,
a celebration of Black History Month. The Live
Oak Library is located at 4153 Live Oak Avenue,
Arcadia. (626) 446-8803.

There are SO MANY wonderful programs at
ALL the libraries. Arcadia City Library has offered
concerts and once on a Saturday afternoon, I stayed
for a wonderful piano recital by local youths. My
husband took my grandson to Monrovia City
Library for a “Legos” play time. The grandkids
enjoyed Ronald McDonald and Kane and Ace
Mask at the Duarte Library. And although it’s
small in size, Live Oak Library has so many great
fun activities for all ages!

There are computers and printing services
available for use at all libraries, and the latest are
the kindles with available books to read! Come on
down or up-depending where you live- and enjoy
our great libraries!

REP. NAPOLITANO ELECTED
RANKING MEMBER OF WATER
RESOURCES SUBCOMMITTEE

(Washington, DC) Today, Rep.
Grace F. Napolitano was elected
unanimously to serve as Ranking
Member of the Transportation &
Infrastructure Subcommittee on
Water Resources and Environment.

 “We look to continue
working on a bipartisan basis to
fix our nation’s crumbling water
infrastructure and secure a reliable
water system for the 21st Century,”
Napolitano said. “Which is why it
is critical we consider all options
when addressing serious threats to
the water supply of California and
states across the country, such as
climate change, increased demand,
pollution, and ongoing drought
cycles. We must also renew federal
commitments to improve our
infrastructure—protecting our
rivers, lakes, and streams—while providing flood control solutions for our
communities. I am grateful for this opportunity to work with Chairman Bob
Gibbs to meet the water needs of all Americans.”;

With jurisdiction over the EPA Clean Water Act programs, Napolitano will
use her new position to encourage EPA and sanitation agencies to find ways to
recycle water for irrigation use and groundwater replenishment; and monitor
the implementation of a new Clean Water Act Stormwater Permit, ensuring
affordability for L.A. County cities and residents.

Ranking Member Napolitano also has oversight of the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers and will continue her work with the Corps, local flood control
districts, and water agencies to capture more water in flood control reservoirs,
which is a major issue at Santa Fe Dam in her district and the bordering Whittier
Narrows Dam; support both the Los Angeles River Revitalization Plan and
improvements to the San Gabriel River with environmental restoration projects
and recreational opportunities, such as bikeways, fishing, and swimming areas;
and improve legislation to require the Corps to provide more equity to the Ports
of Los Angeles and Long Beach in dredging operations.

Napolitano is the most senior California Democratic member as well as
the most senior Hispanic member of the Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee. For the 114th Congress, she retains the other two subcommittee
assignments she has held for the past eight years: the Subcommittee on Highways
and Transit and the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous
Materials.
