Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side by Deanne Davis

“If you love me, if you love, love, love me,

Plant a rose for me.

And if you think you’ll love me for a long, long time,

Plant an apple tree. The sun will shine, the wind will
blow,

The rain will fall and the tree will grow,

And whether you comes, or whether you goes,

I’ll have an apple, and I’ll have a rose,

Lovely to bite, and nice to my nose.

And every juicy nibble will be

A sweet reminder of the time you loved me

And planted a rose for me,

And an apple tree.” Malvina Reynolds

While heading down Baldwin to go to Target one
day this week, I was at the Stop sign at the northwest
corner of Baldwin and Orange Grove, where there
is a spectacular rose garden. As I waited, admiring
the roses, a gentleman walked past them, stopped,
walked back to the beginning of the garden and
touched many of the roses. Smelled some, stepped
back, touched others with the gentlest of hands
and was still so engaged when it was my turn to
move on. He was completely unaware of the world
around him, just the roses before him. That’s pretty
much the way I feel about them, too. Right now,
Sierra Madre is awash in amazing roses. Look
around you as you’re out for your walk. Our town
has never been more beautiful. And we are being
very stingy with water. Like all the rest of us, the
roses have to learn to get along with less.

We’ve sprayed ours with dormant oil,
guaranteed to wipe out spider mites, have given
each one it’s annual quarter cup of Epsom salts,
fed them with Bayer 3-in-1 Rose & Flower Care,
which is loaded with fertilizer to promote strong
roots and beautiful blooms, insect control and
disease control. Powdery mildew on your biggest
rose bush is disconcerting to say the least. Ours are
all in the red-leaf-I’m-almost-ready-to-burst-into-
bloom stage and we’re anxiously awaiting the flood
of roses.

We’re still thinking about Hector Velazquez
Sun Lovers Place which we saw at the Wistaria
Festival. Those big bronze and copper suns
and moons were so unique. We don’t have an
outside wall where one of those would work,
but I’m still measuring between windows. Take
a look at their website: HYPERLINK “http://
www.hectorvelazquezsunloversplace.net” www.
hectorvelazquezsunloversplace.net. Hector’s
family has been making these since 1915, first in
Mexico and, since 2005, here in the U.S. We’re
hoping they’ll be back for the Annual Sierra Madre
Art Fair, May 2-3.

Sierra Brigante, right next to The Only Place In
Town Café, is remodeled, refurbished, and open!
You have got to get in there! Zach and his crew took
down the wall covering the original brick on their
most easterly interior side and it looks fantastic.
Sierra Brigante has fresh fish every single day,
free range chicken and they’re running out of the
Fettuccine Nere Con Cappesante E Gamberi (black
fettuccine with shrimp, scallops, brandy, shallots
and curry cream sauce) every day. Speaking of The
Only Place In Town, they were serving a shrimp-
avocado tostada in there a few days ago that was
fantastic. We are so fortunate to have so many good
restaurants right here in town. Try one this week,
as you’re checking out the roses around town. Bon
Appetit! And may all your roses be nice to your
nose.

SIERRA MADRE POLICE BLOTTER

BARKS AND BOOKS OFFERS FURRY READING FUN

Sierra Madre, CA. – – Children are invited
to read to gentle Apple the Chihuahua
every second Thursday of the month at
the Sierra Madre Public Library. Join
them for Barks & Books on April 9, from
3:30-4:30 pm. This reading enrichment
program makes reading fun, boosts
children’s confidence and encourages
respectful, humane treatment of animals.
Apple is one of the specially trained dogs
from the Companion Animal Program
sponsored by the Pasadena Humane
Society & SPCA. Reading to dogs about
dogs helps children realize that animals
experience emotions similar to their own
and that they have needs like humans
according to the Humane Society.

During the week of Sunday, March 15th, to
Sunday, March 22nd, the Sierra Madre Police
Department responded to approximately 354
calls for service.

Monday, March 16th

At 5:09 am, Sierra Madre Police responded
to the Post Office located at 61 South Baldwin
Ave regarding a report of a mail trap being
discovered. Upon arrival, Officers were
informed by the subject that he was attempting
to use the postal box, but when he opened
the drop box door he discovered the mail
trap device. Upon inspection of the drop box,
Officers discovered a glue board with a black
cord attached to it. The device is commonly
used to “fish” or remove small packages by
dropping the glue board into the box in an
effort to stick it to a package, then pulling it
out by the attached cord. It appeared the glue
board got stuck to the interior of the drop box
and the suspect was unable to remove it. The
box was sectioned off to prevent further use
until the Post Office could properly inspect it.
It is unknown if anything was taken. This case
has been forwarded to the U.S Postal Inspectors
Office.

Thursday, March 19th

At 10:40 am, Sierra Madre Police responded
to the station lobby regarding an identity theft
report. Upon arrival, the victim informed
Officers that his personal bank card had been
compromised on several occasions during
October of 2014 and recently March of 2015. The
victim informed Officers that the compromises
occurred after he had used his card at a local
business. The victim provided card statements
displaying the day after his card was used in the
store, a charge was made from New York. The
victim notified his bank and was reimbursed
for the unauthorized transactions totaling
over $800. This case has been forwarded to the
Detectives Bureau.

Friday, March 20th

At 3:18 pm, Sierra Madre Police responded to
the area of Sunnyside and Sierra Madre Blvd
regarding a possible fight in progress. Upon
arrival, Officers made contact with two male
subjects. The subjects informed Officers that
while traveling eastbound on Sierra Madre
Blvd at a low rate of speed, they approached
a line of cars near the stop sign. Subject one
stopped, and Subject two failed to stop in time
and bumped into the rear of Subject one’s
vehicle. Both subjects exited their vehicle and
ensued in a verbal altercation. When one of
the subjects came at the other aggressively, the
second subject armed himself with a hockey
stick, but never struck the man or vehicle.
While interviewing the subjects, several
witnesses approached Officers described the
verbal altercation between the two men, with
some stating the vehicles did not in fact make
contact but came close to it. Officers were
unable to determine the primary aggressor in
the incident, and both men were warned and
released. This case has been forwarded to the
Detectives Bureau for follow up.

At 5:32 pm, Sierra Madre Police responded to
the 600 Block of Sierra Meadows Dr regarding
suspicious circumstances. The subject informed
Officers that several hours earlier, she received
a phone call at her business from a female
stating she was responding to an employment
ad advertised on an online network for the
position of care giver. The female continued to
inform the subject that she called the number
on the ad and a man directed her to a webpage
to download the job application then to fax
it, but she realized the fax the man gave her
did not match the fax listed on the webpage.
So the female called the subject’s business to
clarify. The subject informed the female that
her company did not recently advertise online
and the female provided the subject with the
man’s cellphone number. The subject called
the number acting as if she was responding
to the job ad and the man gave his name and
webpage to download the job application. The
subject visited the webpage and realized the job
application was identical to her own business’s
application. The subject searched the man’s
name online and came across information that
a man with the same name had been arrested
in the past for a health care fraud scheme and
collected $20 million from Medicare. At this
time it is not known if a crime has occurred.
This case has been forwarded to the Secret
Service for further investigation.
