Most of us know that the nonprofit Assistance League of Arcadia is a
civic-minded organization, but do we really know what its members do
to benefit the community? Members and guests of the California Retired
Teachers’ Association #71 (CalRTA-SGV) will learn of one of the many the
Assistance League’s service projects when its Kids on the Block puppeteers
perform at the retirees’ luncheon meeting on Friday, June 12, at 11:30 a.m.
in the Senior Center Building, Arcadia Park (county park), 405 W. Santa
Anita Avenue, Arcadia, next to the Lawn Bowling Greens. Luncheon
details follow.

As an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, Arcadia’s Assistance League
members work in many ways to serve the needs of the community. One
project is “Operation School Bell,” which supplies local school children
with clothing and school materials. Another project is “Kids on the Block”
in which puppet teams provide skits on smoking, bullying, living with
disabilities, and encouraging exercise to nearly 500 elementary school
children each year. The puppet shows help school children to handle life’s
challenges better. The League’s programs are funded through donations
and by the operation of The Bargain Box thrift store in Arcadia.

Kids on the Block puppet team Shary DeVore, Charlene Martinez,
Diane Lucas, and Carol Misakian will present their skit “Encouraging
Exercise.” Their performance is based on the ancient Japanese style of
puppetry called Bunraku, in which large puppets are used. In this skit, a
puppet character learns that being active is more fun than being a “couch
potato.” The puppet teams present this skit and others to the elementary
schools at no cost.

Guests are welcome to come enjoy the luncheon and to watch the Kids
on the Block puppet performance by the Assistance League puppeteers.
The cost of the luncheon for members and guests is $12. For luncheon
reservations, please call John Gera at (626) 286-0714 by the June 5 deadline.

Membership in the California Retired Teachers’ Association is open
to all retired educators, as well as to any others interested in joining this
active group, which now numbers over 500 members in CalRTA #71, the
San Gabriel Valley Division. The motto of CalRTA remains “Your Partner
in Pension Protection.”

46TH ANNUAL LOS ANGELES COUNTY PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL

By Joan Schmidt

Yesterday I attended the 46th LA County Peace Officers Memorial at
the Sheriff’s Star Center and once again there was a beautiful tribute to
peace officers who have died in the line of duty.

Captain Shaun Mathers welcomed us. The Presentation of Colors
was by the LASD Color Guard Sgt. Gordon Crowl and Deputy Brian
Anderson. Chaplain Fred Krause’s Invocation was followed by the
Introduction of distinguished guests, including Supervisors Mike
Antonovich and Don Knabe, Anaheim Police Assistant Chief Julian
Harvey, CHP Assistant Chief Chris O’Quinn, Covina Police Chief Kim
Raney, Sheriff Jim Mc Donnell, LAPD Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger,
Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna, and Pomona Police Chief Paul
Capraro.

Captain Mathers told us that this past Friday, the Memorial Torch
Run began at Sheriff’s Headquarters. Runners carried it from station to
station- a distance of over 300 miles; covering all the LASD stations.
On Catalina Island, there is a station in Avalon, and they also did a run
simultaneously. The torch was brought to the Star Center and presented
to Sheriff McDonnell and doves were released.

Supervisor Don Knabe was “honored and privileged to share a few
words about heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice and their loved
ones.”

He spoke of communities wanting to be safe and how 99.9% of officers
are good, but the media concentrates on those who aren’t. He reminded
us that each morning a peace officer goes to work, putting his/her life on
the line-a fact that can’t be forgotten and how extremely grateful we are.

Sheriff Mc Donnell spoke of peace officers, who put on a badge and
work with courage and tenacity and quoted the Bible, “Blessed are the
peacemakers”.

The names of the fallen officers were read. Four died tragically in
2014: LAPD Officer Roberto Sanchez, LASD Lieutenant Pat Libertone
(Many years at Temple City), Covina Police Officer Jordan Corder and
Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond. Because of historical research
begun by Deputy Mike Fratantoni and most recently a very diligent John
Stanley, fourteen names were added: John Wheelan, LA County, EOW:
December 7, 1853; Charles Lehman, Anaheim Marshall’s Office, EOW:
July 21, 1872; George Gillis, LASD, EOW: January 12, 1891; James Wylie,
LAPD, EOW: November 27, 1911; James Crehan, LAPD, EOW: March 31,
1914; Charles Johnson, LAPD, EOW: November 13, 1917; Robert Ross,
LASD, EOW: September 24, 1921; Neville Batt, LAPD, EOW: July 9, 1937;
John Dunphy, LAPD, EOW: June 25, 1954; William Waggoner, Long
Beach PD, EOW: December 18, 1954; Leo Wise, LAPD, EOW: March 17,
1957; John Lawler, LAPD, EOW: July 9,1973; Michael Edwards, LAPD,
EOW: May 11, 1974; and David Irwin, CHP, EOW: September 18, 2000.

After the names were read, family members came up and wreaths
were placed. “Taps” by Sgt. Brent Carlson and Benediction by Chaplain
Manton Daley concluded the ceremony. (A special thanks to the
Association for LA County Deputy Sheriffs, LAPD Historical Society,
Professional Peace Officers’ Association, Sheriffs; Relief Association and
Los Angeles Sheriff’s Museum for contributions making this Memorial
possible.) It is my hope that people will realize that most of our peace
officers are hard-working , conscientious, caring men and women who
work daily to keep our neighborhoods safe, although putting themselves
in harm’s way. May God protect them and give the families of fallen
heroes strength to go on.
