What a weekend! The 107th running of the Mt.
Wilson Trail Race was last Saturday and, as you
already know, Alan Reynolds roared through
the winner’s ribbon at 1:05:11. Ben Ward and
Mark Butala were just seconds behind and
the first woman to finish the grueling 8.6 mile
run was Sally June Tracy at 1:13:44. If you were
there, you had a great time, just like we did.
The weather was perfect. Even though we’re all
heartily sick of the May Grey, it was fine for the
race. That Trail is hard enough when it’s cool.
When it’s hot, it’s just murder!

Of course, my favorite is the Kid’s Race where
the 7-12 year olds head up Baldwin first, closely
followed by the 3 to 6 year old crowd. We had to
laugh at the last little guy, holding his Daddy’s
hand and shaking his head in a very definite,
“I don’t wanna go!” at the end of the pack. The
rabbit this year, following in the rabbit steps
of last year’s Simon Cooper, who ran the race
and finished 5th, was Robert Vangilder, former
jockey and member of the Foothill Flyers. The
kids’ shirt, designed by Christine Manoukian,
4th grader at Sierra Madre Elementary, was
beyond cute. Thanks to the Sierra Madre
Community Foundation for these shirts. A
highlight of the morning was Kaiya Wilson’s
beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Kaiya is a 7th grader
at Sierra Madre Middle School. We have such gifted kids in our town,
don’t we! If you didn’t go this year, be sure you go next year as this is
such a fun time to see friends and feel special because you live here!
So many volunteers made it all happen, including i-Fruggi’s donation
of 500 fruit and veggie smoothies! Many thanks to owner, Jerrod
Libonati. Sharon Pevsner, who organizes the Kid’s Race and gets all
these little people stretching, bending and ready to run, worked her
magic on one little girl who took a hard spill at the beginning of the
kids’ race, but Sharon got her up, got the tears dried and she took off
like a rocket quickly passing other kids. Sharon, you’re so neat!

And then it was Monday, Memorial Day...

“Memorial Day isn’t just about honoring veterans, it is honoring
those who lost their lives. Veterans had the fortune of coming home.
For us, that is a reminder of when we come home we still have a
responsibility to serve. It’s a continuation of service that honors our
country and those who fell defending it.” Pete Hegseth

Great quote, you’re thinking, but who’s Pete Hegseth? He’s Chief
Executive Officer for Concerned Veterans for America. Prior to that
he was Executive Director of Vets for Freedom. Before that, he served
in Afghanistan and Iraq. He holds two Bronze Stars and a Combat
Infantryman’s Badge for his time in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Our own Memorial Day Observance was as moving as it always is,
seeing our Sierra Madre Harry L. Embree VFW Post 3208 veterans
standing straight as straight can get, crowd singing the National
Anthem and hearing from Commander David Loera that there are
6800 posts all across the Nation, observing this sacred day. Msgr.
Rickard Krekelberg’s invocation, “we are privileged to gather with our
community in this rich and beautiful land God has given us, at the
awesome cost of freedom.” Congresswoman, Judy Chu, spoke of her
Dad, who served in Okinawa in WWII and passed away at 91 just
a few months ago. She also gave an update on the Veteran’s Health Center for the San Gabriel Valley.

 Former Mayor Mary
Ann MacGilivray, dressed
in one of her famous
sweaters, gave an excellent,
thought provoking, heartfelt
address and we were so glad
we were there. If you didn’t
go this year, you missed out!
Plan to be there next year.
After all, we live in the best
city anywhere, don’t we!

SIERRA MADRE POLICE BLOTTER

For the period SUNDAY, May 17th through SUNDAY, May 24th

During the week of Sunday, May 17th, to Sunday, May 24th, the
Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 314
calls for service.

Tuesday, May 19th

At 5:35 pm, Sierra Madre Police responded to the station lobby
regarding a suspicious person report. Officers were informed by
the young woman that at about 3:50 pm, she was walking west
through the Mariposa parking lot when she turned to look behind
her and noticed a male subject driving slowly in a vehicle behind
her. The young woman stated she was not in the vehicle’s path
and there was plenty of room to allow the vehicle to pass. Feeling
nervous, the young woman sped up her walking pace and soon
realized the vehicle started driving faster to keep up with her.
The woman became scared and started to run west on Mariposa
Ave and noticed the vehicle was still following her. Ultimately
the woman was able to safely run home and witnessed the vehicle
drive off. The subject was described as a Male Hispanic between
the age of 20 and 30 with dark short hair wearing a dark colored
tank top. The vehicle was described as a dark colored 4 door with
moderate paint damage. This case has been forwarded to the
Detective Bureau.

Friday, May 22nd

At 10:45 pm, Sierra Madre Police were patrolling the area on the
100 block of S. Hermosa when they observed a vehicle stopped in
the middle of the road, while a nude female was climbing into the
passenger window. As Officers approached the vehicle they also
saw a male subject in the driver’s seat. The female left the vehicle
as Officers approached and walked into a residence. The Officers
followed the woman and were met by her parents. Officers were
informed by the parents that the woman had recently been
prescribed medication that made her act out violently. Officers
learned that the man in the vehicle was the woman’s boyfriend
and upon trying to leave, she became upset and violent with
him. As he tried to leave the home he suffered an injury from
broken glass. The woman’s father heard the commotion and
attempted to calm his daughter when she physically harmed him.
Sierra Madre Fire Department treated both men, and attempted
to treat the woman, but were unable to due to her not wanting
to cooperate. Officers determined the woman was a danger to
herself and others and placed her on a 72 hour health evaluation.
The woman was ultimately transported and admitted to a local
hospital.

Sunday, May 24th

At 7:30 am, Sierra Madre Police responded to the 600 block of
W. Sierra Madre Blvd regarding an unknown male subject in
the backyard of a residence. The victims informed Officers that
earlier that morning, the wife yelled for her husband that there
was a man in the backyard and he was attempting to open their
glass sliding door. The husband yelled at the man to leave and
the unknown man then left the yard. A short time later, Officers
were able to locate the unknown man. As the Officers questioned
the man, they noticed he appeared to be heavily intoxicated. The
man informed the Officers that he had been drinking and that
he believes himself to be an alcoholic. He stated he did not know
why he was in the victims’ backyard and did not remember going
home last night. Officers ultimately arrested the man for public
intoxication and he was released to Pasadena Jail.
