Gregory Pieschala has
been elected to the Board of
Trustees at The Huntington
Library, Art Collections,
and Botanical Gardens,
Huntington President Laura
S. Trombley announced
Tuesday. A longtime
supporter of the institution,
Pieschala takes the place
of Stewart R. Smith who
is retiring from the board
at the end of June 2017.
Pieschala steps into that
role on July 1. The Board
of Trustees comprises five
members, responsible
for The Huntington’s
financial sustainability and
overarching direction.

 Led by chairwoman Anne
Rothenberg, the Trustees
are supported in their
work by a 60-plus member
Board of Overseers that
helps advise on a range of
specialized areas, including
finance, research, education,
art, library, and botanical
collections. Pieschala has
been a member of that group
since 1999 and currently
serves as its chairman.

“I am delighted to have Greg
join the Board in providing
oversight and guidance
to The Huntington,” said
Trombley. “Greg has been
tremendously engaged
in helping to move the
institution forward over
the years. He has been
extraordinarily generous
with his time, intellect, and
strategic leadership, and The
Huntington is better for it.
I look forward to working
with him as we look to The
Huntington’s future and its
next 100 years.”

 Pieschala first came to
The Huntington in 1993 as
a consultant with McKinsey
and Co., the global
management consultant
group, which had been
engaged, pro bono, to help
the Huntington leadership
conduct strategic planning.
The resulting report, led by
Pieschala, turned out to be
a watershed moment for the
institution, putting in place
a framework for securing
The Huntington’s financial
underpinnings through
more robust audience
engagement and more
dynamic programming
and outreach. The report
also strongly suggested that
The Huntington beef up its
emphasis on K-12 education;
today, the institution serves
more than 20,000 school
children and their teachers
each year through field
trips, special programs, and
school partnerships.

 Pieschala, 59, is president
of BrightView (formerly
ValleyCrest) Golf
Maintenance. Originally
from Indiana, he attended
Stanford University and
graduated in 1979 with a BA
in economics. He earned his
MBA, with distinction, in
1986 from Harvard Business
School. He is past chairman
of the board of the Weingart
Center Association and
current director of the Los
Angeles Children’s Chorus.

 The ride will be tonight
from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
starting at the South
Pasadena Gold Line
Station, Mission Street
and Meridian Ave.

 Grab your best Santa suit,
elf gear, or other holiday
apparel, decorate your bike,
and join the BikeSGV team
for the Cycling Santas Bike
Train.

 The lighted bike parade
will roll from the Gold Line
Mission St. Station and
traverse an 8 mile route
along bicycle-friendly and
festively-lighted streets
in South Pasadena, San
Marino, and Alhambra,
with a special stop for
refreshments at The Cub
House, and optional post-
ride food/drink options in
downtown South Pasadena.

 December’s bike train will
also feature a special raffle
and prizes for those who
decorate their bikes, don
holiday attire, and/or bring
donations of toys & clothing
for our friends at the El
Monte Resource Center, a
local organization that runs
a food pantry program and
supports families in need.

 Since January 2011, the
monthly SGV Bike Train
has introduced community
members to regional
bikeways and the myriad
benefits of bicycling as a
sustainable, healthy form
of transportation, physical
activity, and recreation.
Newcomers build
confidence while learning
cycling etiquette, group
riding skills, and more.

San Marino Crowel Library
Rose Pruning Workshop

Ron Serven, (pictured)
Environmental Services
Manager/City Arborist for
the City of San Marino, will
conduct his 24nd annual
rose pruning workshop on
Saturday January 7 at the
Crowell Public Library,
and give even the most
inexperienced gardeners
the knowledge to promote
healthy, beautiful rose
blooming when spring
comes around. Learn the
techniques in one two-hour
session and be ready to work
in companionship with
nature.

 A former City Parks
Division Manager, Ron’s
expertise with roses is still
visible throughout the city,
particularly at beautiful Lacy
Park. Many rose lovers have
benefited from and attended
repeat performances
of Ron’s workshop at
Crowell Library. He will
demonstrate optimum rose
pruning techniques and
answer questions from the
audience, such as what to do
in cold weather, or how to
deal with irregular rainfall.
Those who attend will be
ready to go out into their
own yards the very same day
to get the job done. Rose
pruning promotes healthy
roses and abundant blooms
in the spring. Increasing air
circulation can help prevent
disease.

 Attendees will get a better
sense of how Mother Nature
works and will soon be
spending some enjoyable
time in their home gardens,
armed with the knowledge
to keep it thriving and
beautiful.

 The workshop is free
and runs 9:00-11:00 a.m.,
reservations are not required,
questions, please call the
library (626) 300-0777,
extension 579. The library
is located 1890 Huntington
Drive, San Marino.

Pasadena and he will be
visiting the South Pasadena
Fire Station, 817 Mound
