Volunteers work on South
Pasadena Float ‘Never Give Up’

Analyses of the Library Strategic
Plan Survey Now Available

Story and Photos by Dean Lee

Despite rainy weather, Head Decorator and President of South
Pasadena Tournament of Roses Janet Benjamin had a bucket of
roses in her hand Friday as she helped the many volunteers trying
to finish the city’s float aptly named “‘Never Give Up.”

“This year we have bumped up the number of flowers,” Benjamin
said. “We made a commitment to be at least 70 to 80 percent
floral, leaves, and flowers instead of seed.”

South Pasadena Tournament of Roses is the oldest “self built” float
in the parade, dating to 1893, and being all floral is a throwback to
early years of the parade. She said they also harvested Eucalyptus
bark for the large trees at the back of the float, “We got that from
the War Memorial Building, she said. " We’re also scavengers."

A volunteer pictured above puts Garbanzo beans on the
underside of the tortoise. Benjamin said this is the first time they
have used the beans.

The base of the float will be Wimbledon green roses, “so it will
look like a lawn,” she said.

This year’s theme is the age old Aesop’s Fable the Hare and the
Tortoise. The tortoise races to win and great 2017 while the
overconfident hare naps. Long time South Pasadena resident Ann
Muller came up with this year’s design.

Benjamin joked that riding on the float are, Ted the tortoise,
Harry the hare, Squishy the snail
and Sheldon the turtle.

 Public response to South
Pasadena Public Library’s
online Strategic Planning
survey has been very strong
with about 700 community
members completing the
survey. The online survey was
utilized to collect opinions,
suggestions, and thoughts about
the Library from the public. The
Library’s Strategic Planning
Consultant Joe Matthews also
conducted a Strategic Planning
Community Forum on
October 22 in the Community
Room. It was attended by about
20 individuals, comprised of
members of the public, the
Friends of the Library, the
Library Board of Trustees, and
the Library staff. The Library
is very appreciative of all the
input from the public from
both the Community Forum
and the Online Forum.

 Mr. Matthews has recently
published four new easy-to-
read documents that offer
analyses of the public’s Library
Strategic Planning responses:
“Analysis of Online Survey—
‘Inspiring Ideas,” “Analysis
of the Community-Related
Questions,” “Online Survey
Appendix, and “Online Survey
Related Questions”. The
documents can be found under
“News” on the homepage of
the South Pasadena Library
Website and southpasadenaca.
