FOOTHILL UNITY CELEBRATES 35 YEARS:

BOB WIGHT RETIRES AFTER 30 YEARS OF
COMMUNITY SERVICE

Last Saturday, at Santa Anita Park was the 50th Running of the Monrovia Stakes during the 7th Race.
Favored was Ageless, ridden by Jockey Julian Leparoux; both had flown in from back East-Keeneland,
only to come in 3rd Place.

Winning horse was Prize Exhibit; Winning jockey, Santiago Gonzalez; trained by Jim Cassidy; owners,
DP Racing.

On hand to make the presentation was Monrovia Mayor Pro Tem Larry Spicer and his family.

By Joan Schmidt

In 1980, Josephine Anderson founded Foothill Unity
Center in a borrowed closet at Immaculate Conception
Church, Monrovia; in 1991, it was incorporated as a 501
c(3) non-profit. Since its inception, it has continued to
serve qualified low-income families and people in crisis;
annually about 10, 000 individuals. Foothill Unity Center is
the primary provider of food, case management/crisis help
and health care resources across eleven San Gabriel Valley
cities in LA County with its two help centers in Monrovia
and Pasadena.

One of their greatest projects is the Back to School Event.
This past August 11, 2015 event was a HUGE success!
Hosted at Santa Anita Park, more than 1000 K-12 low
income students were provided with all the tools and
supplies needed for a great school year! Each pre-registered
child received a brand new backpack, school supplies,
clothing, shoe card, haircut, manicure and needed vision
and dental screenings. (Dental screenings by USC School
of Dentistry; vision screenings CHAP Care-California
Health Alliance of Pasadena) This awesome event only
happened because of a community effort of individuals,
businesses and faith based and civic organizations and
corporate sponsors.

Bob Wight is a very familiar face throughout our local
communities. Besides his tenure at the Foothill Unity
Center, Bob worked many years at Century 21-Barnes and
Adams office, Monrovia. He and his wife Jan have been an
integral part of the Duarte community forever. Jan served
on the Chamber many years and her service to the Friends
of the Duarte Library is unmatched. Bob has always been
there working with Jan on numerous community service
projects.

When I spoke to Barbara Rolf at Foothill Unity Center,
she told me Bob Wight was their first Board President and
how he played such an important role for thirty years in all
their service projects.

What is awesome to me is his retirement party. Many
parties cost $35-$50.per person. No, Bob’s will be at
Domenico’s Italian Restaurant, with refreshments/Hor
d’oeurs. There is NO CHARGE. He asked that you may
consider supporting his favorite cause-Foothill Unity
Center-Team 35-Bob’s Retirement.

What the Center is doing –in conjunction with its 35th
anniversary- they are having a great “Team 35 Challenge”.
They have asked individuals/groups to donate $35 and
become a team captain who solicits 34 individuals to
become part of the team and donate or raise $35, which
would be $1225. I visited http://foothillunitycenter.org and
found MANY individuals/groups doing this. A few include
“Friends of Bob Bartlett”, “Duarte Kiwanis-Reyna Diaz”,
and “Pet Food Bank.”

 Please visit http://foothillunitycenter.org website and
consider donating to ANY of the teams. I cannot say enough
about this wonderful organization.
