We love your awesome lavender cloud, And shout, “That’s amazing!” Right out loud!” A Spring, sort-of Haiku, by me. So I’m sitting at the kitchen table with my favorite breakfast companion, John, relishing that gourmet treat: oatmeal and raisins, desultorily leafing through Tuesday’s Los Angeles Times newspaper/ birdcage liner, when what do my wondering eyes behold? My brother-in-law, right on the front of the California section! The caption reads, “A voter at the Hollywood Recreation Center in March.” There was more, but that’s the important part. There he is, Jay ‘Tex’ Davis, singer-songwriter, sculptor, painter, whose work has been for sale in the gift shops of some of the biggest Las Vegas hotels. Another interesting fact is that he will be 91 this year! He sang and played his guitar at our 50th anniversary party last April 1st. He spends many of his weekends singing and playing at a variety of rest home/assisted living facilities in the Hollywood area. We have two of his sculptures, a longhorn steer and a rodeo bull rider on a bucking bull. They’re small but tremendously detailed and faithful to anatomy of both cowboy and bull. Pretty cool, huh! The picture is Jay at the polls. Hope your Mother’s Day was as nice as mine, which kicked off Saturday with a packagefrom Shari’s Berries containing six enormouschocolate-dipped strawberries, three of which Iimmediately devoured, saying through a mouthfulof chocolate and strawberries, “Gosh, honey, toobad you don’t care for strawberries.” I didn’t meanit, more for me! Also in that package were threelittle cheesecakes which we are slowly savoring. John does like cheesecake. We figure half of oneeach day will be perfect and will last a little while. This lovely gift was from our Texas girl, Crissy, and her family. They will be here to visit June 1st. Are we excited? Oh my yes! Emily (who is 8) said, “I want to go to the beach, Disneyland and LegoLand!” You got it, Emily! Jessie just wants to go“everywhere!” Stopped in to check out the new restaurant where Citta Café used to be, just west of Happy’s Liquors, and found it’s going to be another sushi restaurant called Yui. Lots of flower arrangements out front and they’ll be ready soon. We went to see our ophthalmologist yesterday and they had this recipe sitting out on the counter for people to try... it sounds so tasty I wanted to share: Carrot Apple Slaw 1 large sweet red apple1 large Granny Smith apple1 tablespoon lemon juice . the zest of one lemon 10 oz. raw shredded carrots (about 3 cups) . cup mayonnaise1/3 cup nonfat yogurt2 tablespoons honey2 tablespoons white wine vinegar . cup crumbled feta cheese (about 3 oz.) 2 green onions, diced . cup dried sweetened cranberries . cup raisinsSalt & pepper to taste. 1. Core and cut apples into chunks. Place in a large bowl and toss with lemon juice. Add carrots and stir to combine. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, yogurt, honey, white wine vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour over apple carrot mixture and stir to coat. Mix in feta cheese, dried cranberries, raisins, lemon zest and sliced green onions. Refrigerate 20 minutes to an hour to allow flavors to blend. Serve cold and enjoy, I’m trying it! Have a great week and feed your citrus trees this coming week. Do the roses, too. My tomato has four little green tomatoes on it! How is yours doing?
