Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis- based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a wonderful life aboard their family’s Mississippi River boat. But when their father rushes their mother to the hospital, Rill is left in charge until strangers arrive in force. Thrown into an orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents but they quickly realize they are trapped in a world of danger and uncertainty. The Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. No tickets or reservations are necessary and refreshments will be served. Autographed books will be available for purchase. Heading into its 11th year, the Rotary Club of South Pasadena and the South Pasadena Public Library are proudly continuing “The Golden State Collection,” a joint partnership that has greatly expanded the Library’s collection of checkout books on California related subjects. The project is responsible for the addition of hundreds of new books to the Library collection on various aspects of its home state. Each Tuesday for its noon meeting in the Oneonta Tower Room, the Rotary Club honors its guest speaker by donating a Golden State title selected by the Library staff for the Library collection. Each book is affixed with a custom “Golden State Collection” bookplate that the guest speaker signs so that the already-catalogued book can go straight into the library collection. Titles purchased through the years provide an outstanding assortment of many of the best new books on California’s arts, history, leaders, ethnic groups, legends, geography, travel, nature, and much more. All of the Golden State books are added to the Library checkout collection and some of them go right into the front area of the Library. New titles are added regularly. The following is a list of the titles purchased recently from Heyday Books of Berkeley, California: “Changing Season: A Father, A Daughter, A Family Farm” by David Mas Masumoto “De-Bug: Voices from the Underside of Silicon Valley” edited by Raj Jayadev “Deeper Than Gold: A Guide to Indian Life in the Sierra Foothills” by Brian Bibby “Earthquake Exodus, 1906: Berkeley Responds to the San Francisco Earthquake Refugees” by Richard Schwartz “Flutes of Fire: Essays on California Indian Languages” by Leanne Hinton “Heirlooms: Letters from a Peach Farmer” by David Mas Masumoto “Indian Summer: Traditional Life Among the Choinumne Indians of California’s San Joaquin Valley” by Thomas Jefferson Mayfield “Orange County: A Literary Field Guide” by Nancy Conner “She Sang Me A Good Luck Song: The Californian Indian Photographs of Dugan Aguilar” by Dugan Aguilar “Spring Salmon, Hurry to Me!: The Seasons of Native California” edited by Margaret Dubin “Topaz Moon: Chiura Obata’s Art of the Internment” edited by Kimi Kodani Hill “Where on Earth: A Guide to Specialty Nurseries and Gardens in California” edited by Lisa Alvarez For more information visit ci.south-pasadena.ca.us The Gold Line offers some fun getaways and this is the first in a series of destinations and events along the Metro that standout to us here at the Mountain Views News.
