Rotary Club ‘Golden
State Collection’
Partnership with Library

Author Night with NY Times
Novelist Lisa Wingate

An Author Night presenting
nationally known, award-
winning novelist Lisa Wingate
will be showcased in the
beautiful, historic South
Pasadena Public Library
Community Room on Tuesday,
June 27 at 7:00 p.m. The free
program is presented by
the South Pasadena Public
Library, the Friends of the
South Pasadena Public Library,
and Flintridge Bookstore and
Coffeehouse. Doors will open
at 6:30 p.m.

 Lisa Wingate is a former
journalist, a motivational
speaker, and the author of more
than twenty popular novels.
Her work has won or been
nominated for many prestigious
awards, including the Pat
Conroy Southern Book Prize,
the Oklahoma Book Award, the
Utah Library Award, and many
others. Americans for More
Civility, a kindness watchdog
organization, selected Lisa
along with six others for the
National Civies Award, which
celebrates public figures who
promote greater kindness and
civility in American life.

Lisa lives in the mountains of
southwest Arkansas and is on
tour for her new book, “Before
We Were Yours”, published June
6, 2017 by Random House.
Translation rights have already
been sold in 14 countries
and the book has almost
immediately been accorded 139
glowing reviews on Amazon.
com which averages 5 Stars, the
highest rating possible.

 “Before We Were Yours”
is a thought-provoking and
complex tale about two
families, two generations apart
and is based on a notorious
true-life scandal that took place
in Memphis in 1939. Georgia
Tann, director of a Memphis-
based adoption organization,
kidnapped and sold poor
children to wealthy families all
over the country.

 Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and
her four younger siblings live
a wonderful life aboard their
family’s Mississippi River boat.
But when their father rushes
their mother to the hospital, Rill
is left in charge until strangers
arrive in force. Thrown into an
orphanage, the Foss children
are assured that they will soon
be returned to their parents but
they quickly realize they are
trapped in a world of danger
and uncertainty.

 The Library Community
Room is located at 1115 El
Centro Street. Doors will
open at 6:30 p.m. No tickets or
reservations are necessary and
refreshments will be served.
Autographed books will be
available for purchase.

 Heading into its 11th year,
the Rotary Club of South
Pasadena and the South
Pasadena Public Library are
proudly continuing “The
Golden State Collection,”
a joint partnership that
has greatly expanded
the Library’s collection
of checkout books on
California related subjects.
The project is responsible
for the addition of hundreds
of new books to the Library
collection on various aspects
of its home state.

 Each Tuesday for its noon
meeting in the Oneonta
Tower Room, the Rotary
Club honors its guest
speaker by donating a
Golden State title selected
by the Library staff for the
Library collection. Each
book is affixed with a custom
“Golden State Collection”
bookplate that the guest
speaker signs so that the
already-catalogued book can
go straight into the library
collection. Titles purchased
through the years provide an
outstanding assortment of
many of the best new books
on California’s arts, history,
leaders, ethnic groups,
legends, geography, travel,
nature, and much more.

 All of the Golden State
books are added to the
Library checkout collection
and some of them go right
into the front area of the
Library. New titles are added
regularly. The following is a
list of the titles purchased
recently from Heyday Books
of Berkeley, California:
