Holly St. , will focus on classical, jazz and swing music. The series, which embraces lifelong learning, is open to members and non-members of the Pasadena Senior Center ages 50 and older. The Many Joys of Music – Tuesdays, to Aug. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. Dr. Alan Chapman will introduce participants to the next phase of a stimulating journey into the world of classical music, with talks examining a variety of works including the music of Spain, symphonies of the 20th century and the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. Chapman hosts four classical music programs on KUSC Classical Radio.. He is a faculty member at the Colburn Conservatory of Music as well as a composer and lyricist. America’s Music: Jazz and Swing – Thursdays, to Aug. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. Dr. Thom Mason will discuss the rise of jazz and swing from their roots in New Orleans through Chicago to New York and across the nation and will highlight some renowned American, British and Canadian singers of these genres. Mason is professor emeritus of jazz studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. Specializing in saxophone and other woodwind instruments, he has performed in concerts throughout the world and recorded several albums. Register for one full curriculum session (Tuesdays or Thursdays) for $100 or the entire term (Tuesdays and Thursdays) for $175. In the event the full class schedule, including the topics associated with each date, is available prior to the start of The Masters Series, members will have the option of registering for individual classes for $15 each. There will be no classes Tuesday, July 4, and Thursday, July 6, due to the Fourth of July holiday. The Masters Series is funded in part by the Pasadena Literary Alliance.
