Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side

by Deanne Davis

“This year I just want to go on more adventures, bearound good energy, connect with people, learn newthings and grow.”

“Its pages are blank. We are going to put words onthem ourselves.

The book is called ‘Opportunity’ and its first
chapter is New Year’s Day.”

“What if you simply devoted this year to lovingyourself more!”

“Do more of what makes you happy!”

We’re three weeks into the New Year and I’m actuallykeeping the resolution I made. It’s one of those above.
How are you doing with yours? What’s at the top ofmost people’s resolution list? Lose weight. Yep, yearafter year, we all want to lose weight. What else do wewant to change about ourselves? More exercise? LessTV? More reading? Tackle the World’s Great Books?
Clean out our desk? Meditate? There are so manythings we can do to make ourselves crazy trying toremake ourselves.

Exercise. Sigh… I don’t do enough of it and Iknow it. You probably don’t either. I’ve been givingmyself the excuse of the bum knee, which will bereplaced January 16th. Then I’ll have no excuse atall. I’m also fond of It’s too cold! It’s too hot! But
those are really lame and I admit it. For years Johnand I talked about taking a walk in the evening butthere’s something about it getting to be the end ofthe day when all one really wants to do is get intoone’s jammies and not doing anything more difficultthan walk into the kitchen for… wait for it… not ice
cream…not cookies…no, another glass of TraderJoe’s lemon flavored sparkling water and maybe anapple.

The world of serious exercise folks tell us that
we need just as much resistance training as we docardio. Weight training makes for stronger bonesand all sorts of good stuff. But you can’t go to thegym till you do something with the bed-head hair,
put some concealer on the bags under the eyes and,
for pity’s sake, just a little blush so one doesn’t looklike a zombie. Unfortunately, a very dear friend justsent me a cute little tin full of fudge. I love fudge. Myfavorite treat in this world? A McDonald’s hot fudge

sundae. Yes, friends, I’m admitting that in print. I’vealready eaten 3 pieces of this fudge and have to figureout a way to store it out of my sight till Super BowlSunday so I can bring it out and leave it with otherpeople.

This is getting way too close to home. I’m actuallygoing to have to act on this as I’ve written it down.
OK, the world is my witness, I’m going to startwalking just as soon as I recover from my kneereplacement. Even if it’s freezing? Yep, even then.

I made a few more resolutions after reading aneditorial Susan Henderson wrote a while back. Here
are a few of her thoughts that really struck me: Ifwe want to make society better, we must start withourselves. How about not making generalizationsthat disparage people who are different. Considermaking a concentrated effort to see people asindividuals instead of lumping them in with whatevergroup is making bad news currently. If we start withourselves, we can diminish the amount of hatred that
permeates the air. Here is her resolution, with whichI wholeheartedly agree: Let’s all do better! Let’s startwith ourselves, one person at a time. Let’s see if we
can make love and respect spread that way. Let’s make2018 the year when we passionately, as individualswork on real change. Oh, if you’re wondering whichresolution I picked for myself? It’s actually all of thoseup there at the top. Well, yeah, I’d like to lose a little
weight, too. And maybe go through my closet andtake out all the clothes I haven’t worn in five years orlonger. Maybe get my car washed more than threetimes a year. And, as Aaron Burr says to AlexanderHamilton in Hamilton: “Smile more, talk less!”

“Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with
me.” Jill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller - 1955.
