MONROVIA, CA – Community members filled the Monrovia High School bleachers on Oct. 12, chanting for the Wildcats and supporting breast cancer Awareness by dressing in all pink during Monrovia’s Homecoming game. The game, which doubled as a celebration for the school’s 125th anniversary, brought students, families and alumni together to share their pride for Monrovia. For 125 years, Monrovia High has provided students with quality academic and athletic programs that include a Math and Science Academy, Theatre Arts Conservatory, Humanities Academy, Sports Medicine pathway, Digital Media Arts Academy and Early College program. “Our Homecoming game is a great opportunity for us to not only celebrate our high school, but also invite back all of our alumni,” Principal Kirk McGinnis said. “These 125 years represent persistence, tradition and dedication. I don’t know many schools in this area that have been around that long, and I think it is a testament to the work we have done as a District.” During halftime, Board of Education President Terrence Williams expressed his pride of being a part of Monrovia’s community, leading the crowd in singing Happy Birthday to the school. The Homecoming Court also was presented, naming senior Anthony Tyus and senior Jessica Mejia King and Queen. The halftime celebration was concluded by a fireworks show. “Throughout my time serving on the Board of Education, many Wildcats have gone on to continue their success after graduation, and I know their success is credited to the opportunities offered to them here,” Williams said. “All of us here tonight are the perfect representation of what it means to be a Wildcat.” The Wildcats secured the win over La Canada, 42-0, when the game was cut at halftime due to a lightning storm. MORE “We are very proud of our student athletes who played exceptionally well during their Homecoming game,” Superintendent Katherine Thorossian said. “We are excited to be celebrating 125 years and look forward to providing our students with rigorous academic programs and pathways for years to come.” MONROVIA, CA – The City of Monrovia, in partnership with Daylight Limited LLC, has received a prestigious California Preservation Foundation (Foundation) Award for the rehabilitation of the Historic Santa Fe Depot (Depot). The Foundation honors the dedication of those who protect, preserve and restore historic places in California including government agencies, non-profit organizations and developers. “The Historic Santa Fe Depot is a community treasure whose history is completely intertwined with the development of the City,” said Council Member Gloria Crudgington. Despite numerous hurdles, the City recognized the Depot as one of Monrovia’s most historically significant buildings. Until recent years, the Depot sat dormant and as a result had fallen into disrepair. The project included the repair, restoration and rehabilitation of the Depot, allowing it to be repurposed as a restaurant. “There were so many people and groups that played a part in bringing this building back to life” said Craig Jimenez, Director of Community Development. “The City Council provided the vision and funding. The Historic Preservation Commission gave tremendous support to ensure the rehabilitation maintained the architectural integrity. City staff, from all departments, were instrumental in the day-to-day oversight and implementation of the plans. Most importantly, the community for being vocal supporters of the project!” Although the Depot was originally built in 1926, the area that makes up Station Square has been Monrovia’s transportation hub since 1887. The rehabilitation of the Depot connects the past with the future of transportation in the community. Monrovia’s most iconic historic landmark is now ready for a unique operator to bring a special dining experience.
