South Pas Vacancies offer civic involvement opportunities South Pasadena is seeking qualified, diverse candidates to serve on City commissions ranging from animal welfare to public safety. Multiple vacancies on 10 City commissions have created opportunities for residents to become more actively involved in their local government. The commissions generally meet once a month in the evenings. The City is interested increasing the gender and ethnic diversity of its commission appointments, said incoming Mayor Marina Khubesrian. All South Pasadena residents who are registered to vote are eligible to serve on a commission. Applications are accepted online and in person. A free writing club open to members of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., will meet at 10 a.m. every Tuesday. Prior writing experience is not required. The instructor, Dr. Sam Eisenstein, will lead participants through the process of writing in each of their preferred genres, from memoirs to fiction. Eisenstein taught creative writing from 1961 to 2017 at Los Angeles City College, where he also served as the advisor on the English Department’s annual literary journal The Citadel. He is a Fulbright scholar who taught for one year in Japan. He has published novels, collections of stories, essays and poetry. The winner of the competition will appear as a Guest Soloist with the Pasadena Community Orchestra on May 10, 2019 and receive a $500 cash award.
