Chamber Set for Annual 
Spring Golf Tournament

PASADENA CITY MEETINGS

 Join Pasadena Chamber 
of Commerce members, 
business and community 
leaders for the annual 
Pasadena Chamber 
of Commerce Golf 
Tournament on Friday, 
April 5, 2019, at Brookside 
Golf Club. Shotgun start is 
at 8am following the putting 
contest. Registration begins 
that morning at 7am. Light 
breakfast prior to play, on-
course drinks and more 
included in the cost to play.

 Anyone wishing 
information or who wants 
to sign up to play or sponsor 
the tournament can call the 
Chamber at 626-795-3355

chamber.org. Information 
and sign up forms are posted

org.

 Golfers of all abilities are 
welcome. The Tournament 
can only accommodate 144 
golfers, so register early to 
ensure a place. The Chamber 
holds a raffle, sells mulligan 
packages, hosts putting, 
longest drive and closest to 
the pin contests and adds a 
few special nuances to play, 
making the tournament 
fun for everyone. Raffle 
prizes may include iPad 
minis, a flat screen TV and 
items donated by Chamber 
members including dinner 
at some of Pasadena’s favorite 
restaurants, and much more.

 Sierra Family of Dealerships 
is donating a new car as the 
prize, should any golfer be 
skilled (or lucky) enough 
to get a hole-in-one on the 
designated hole.

 All golfers get golf, a cart, 
gifts, on-course snacks and 
a hosted cocktail reception 
and awards ceremony. You 
can sign up as a single, two, 
three or foursome. Cost 
for golfers is $200 each or 
foursomes for $800. The 
cocktail reception costs $50.

One City, One Story: 
What Is a Western Film

 

 Carl Kozlowski, film critic and 
arts editor for the Pasadena 
Weekly, will host two classic 
western movies this week in the 
Donald R. Wright Auditorium 
at Pasadena Central Library.

 The films will be shown in 
conjunction with the City of 
Pasadena’s annual One City, 
One Story community reading 
celebration. This year’s novel, 
written by Hernán Diaz, is “In 
the Distance,” a Pulitzer Prize 
finalist about a Swedish boy in 
the Old West.

 Kozlowski will introduce the 
films, which will be followed 
by a Q&A with the audience. 
The evenings also will include 
western singalongs led by 
country-Americana band 
McMains.

· “Shane” (1953, NR) 
directed by George Stevens 
and starring Alan Ladd, Jean 
Arthur and Van Heflin will be 
shown Thursday, March 28, 
at 6 p.m. A mysterious drifter 
rides into a community of 
homesteaders in Wyoming 
Territory where he works for a 
farming family, is idolized by a 
young boy and faces down the 
minions of a land baron who 
is trying to steal properties 
from landowners through 
intimidation and violence. With 
its vast landscapes and close-
up character studies, the film 
earned the Academy Award for 
Best Cinematography.

· “How the West Was Won” 
(1962, PG) directed by John 
Ford, Henry Hathaway and 
George Marshall, narrated by 
Spencer Tracy and featuring 
a 24-member all-star cast 
including James Stewart, 
Gregory Peck and Henry Fonda 
will be shown Saturday, March 
30, at 2 p.m. The epic film 
chronicles, in five sequences, 
the great western expansion 
from 1839 to 1889 as settlers 
make the difficult and often 
dangerous trek from the east 
and Midwest to put down 
roots in California. The film 
won Academy Awards for Best 
Screenplay, Best Film Editing 
and Best Sound.

 “Westerns are a uniquely 
American film genre filled 
with heroism and derring-do. 
‘Shane’ and ‘How the West 
Was Won’ go the extra mile 
to be amazing works of art as 
well as hugely entertaining,” 
said Kozlowski. “I enjoy giving 
people extra insights into the 
making of each film, and it’s 
fantastic to have a free mini-
concert of great cowboy music 
before the show as well.”

a year to $1 million a year or 
more.

San Marino Free Bulky 
Item Pick-up Scheduled

 

 A free bulky item pick-
up day is scheduled for 
Saturday, July 13th. Please 
call the City’s trash hauler, 
Athens Services, to make 
an appointment if you have 
bulky items you would like 
removed. Athens’s customer 
service number is (888) 336-
6100.

 “Bulky” items are those that 
are oversized or overweight, 
such as stoves, refrigerators 
(Freon free), water heaters, 
washing machines, 
furniture, sofas, mattresses, 
box springs and large rugs.

 
The San Marino budget process for 
Fiscal Year 2019-2020 is currently 
underway, and City Council is 
considering what special projects – 
or priority initiatives – staff should 
dedicate time and/or financial 
resources to (in addition to their 
standard operating tasks) next year. 

 Using the City’s 8 “Critical Success 
Factors” as a framework, City 
Council has identified 21 initiative 
ideas to consider further. These 21 
options are still in the idea phase; 
they are not fully fleshed out plans. 
Before making any final decisions 
and turning them into fully planned 
initiatives, City Council is interested 
in hearing which initiative ideas 
community members think are the 
most important.

Athens Recycling Facility Tour

 The City of San Marino, 
in cooperation with Athens 
Services, Inc., is offering an 
opportunity for residents 
to visit the recycling 
facility that manages all 
trash collected in the City. 
The trip will take place on 
Saturday, April 20th from 10 
a.m. to noon. Registration 
and transportation will 
be provided through the 
Recreation Department. The 
bus will depart promptly 
at 9:30 a.m. from the Lacy 
Park Scout House located 
on the west side of the park. 
Arrive by 9:15 am to ensure 
you you don’t miss the bus
