Last week, Council Member
Gloria Crudgington shared with
the community that she had
been diagnosed with oral cancer.
The early stage tumor that was
detected in her tongue was most
likely caused by oral lichen planus,
a rare autoimmune disorder, and a
disorder that only rarely results in
cancer. Of note, a comprehensive
head to toe PET scan confirmed
that the cancer is confined to
her tongue, and after multiple
visits to the Keck USC Medical
Center and the City of Hope,
Council Member Crudgington
had elective surgery to remove
the tumor at the City of Hope this
past Thursday, February 7, 2019.

I am so delighted to be able to share that the
operation was a complete success! After more than
two hours of surgery, the tumor was successfully
removed from Council Member Crudgington’s
tongue, and further biopsy analysis indicated that
the cancerous cells were confined
to the tumor that was removed.
Cleve Crudgington, Council
Member Crudgington’s terrific
live-in nurse (and husband),
shared that although she is in
pain, she has been “bouncing
back with remarkable speed.”
In fact, Council Member
Crudgington was reported to be
maintaining her unique sense
of humor, and was recovering
well enough to be released to
return home this past Saturday,
February 9.

In the coming weeks, I’m sure that
Council Member Crudgington
will have more to share about this
entire situation. In the meantime,
I am sure that everyone in the community feels the
same sense of outright relief and absolute delight at
this amazing news! Here’s to more warm thoughts
and good vibes being sent her way as she continues to
recover from this particular fight with cancer!
