BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL HOSTS
GRANDPARENTS AND SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY

Bethany Christian School held a special Grandparents
and Special Friends Day on November 19. The purpose
of the event was to honor and give thanks to our students’
grandparents and special friends for the important
role they play in their lives.

Over 200 guests traveled from as far as Boston, MA and
Miami, FL to attend the event. The morning began with
Bethany’s unique “Morning Muster” at which the entire
school gathered to pledge allegiance to our country and
our faith, and listen to a performance by Bethany Lions
Choir. This was followed by breakfast in the courtyard
with photo booth opportunities and then a program in
the gym in which all of the Bethany classes performed
numbers to honor their guests.

Students were then dismissed to pray with their grandparents
and show them their classrooms. As a special
feature, many Sierra Madre restaurants offered special
discounts so that grandparents could take their grandchildren
out to lunch in town following the event. These restaurants included The Only Place
in Town, Casa Del Ray, Corfu, Lemon Zest, Lucky Baldwin’s and Mother Moo Creamery.

Grandparents and special friends had a wonderful time as expressed by one of the Bethany
grandparents who said, “The whole event was extraordinary! All your collective hard work
really paid off as the Lord truly blessed us all.” For more information on Bethany Christian
School visit www.bcslions.org or call 626-355-3527.

CITRUS COLLEGE FOSTER YOUTH PROGRAM

HIGHLIGHTED

Jorge Razo shared information on the Citrus
College Foster/Kinship Care Education
Program and resources. This program is
provided for former foster care youth and
adults as well as youths on probation. There
is no age limit for the Guardian Scholars
Program. Students coming into this program
are provided resources to minimize
barriers to their success.

Many students may lack stable housing, or
may be single parents themselves. Jorge's
program works to build trust with these
students and expand the program through
"word of mouth".

One example of the community partners
with the program is the "church ladies".
This group of women come together to celebrate
birthdays for students in the program
-making them a blanking and bringingcupcakes. Most of the students share thatprior to entering this program, no one evercelebrated their birthdays.

Jorge shared a sample success story of one former participant who had graduated from Citrus.
She was accepted at UC Berkley, became very active in city government and at age 22 is
now running for City Council.

If you are interested in joining the Duarte Kiwanis or presenting at a future meeting, please
contact Tina Carey at tinac51@aol.com. The club is currently meeting virtually through
Zoom.
