Photos by Dirk Bolle On SaturdayMarch 12th, the Sierra Madre Fire Department and members of the community welcomed the department's new 2021 Pierce Enforcer Fire En- gine into service with a traditional "Wet Down" and "Push In" ceremony. The new Engine 41 was "Wet Down" by the department's de- parting 22-year- old E-One fire engine, and dried down bySMFD personnel and community members. Fol- lowing the wet down, the engine was "Pushed In" by current and former SMFD members and volunteers, offi- cially welcomingEngine 41 into service. This fire tradi- tion dates back to the 1800’s when fire departments used horses to pull pumpers to fires. When the fire was over and firefighters returned to the firehouse, and be- fore the horses went back into their stalls or the pumpers back in the station, they had to be washed and readied for the next fire. Firefight- ers then had to push the pumper back into the station by hand, as the horses were not able to easily back them in.” Once these tasks were ac- complished, the pumper was then declared ready to serve again. SMFD’s new Engine 41 was custom built by Pierce ManufacturingInc. It features an Enforcer chassis with a Cummins X12 engine and TAK-4 Independent Front Suspension for better control through the streets and canyons of Sierra Madre. The pump system features a Hale Midship 1500gpm pump, coupled with a 500-gallon water tank and a Husky 12 foam system. Engine 41 has incorporated a Pierce Command Zone electrical system for full control and monitoring of the apparatus. “Your Sierra Madre Fire Department would like to thank all those who attended this past Saturday’s ceremony, placing our new fire en- gine in service,” states Chief Bartlett. “The new engine will be a valu- able asset for the hard-working men and women as they continue to provide the highest level of service. What a great day, with beautiful weather and outstanding community support!” A special thank you to South Coast Fire Equipment for joining us and for capturing this memorable event. real estate Jan Greteman 626.975.4033 jan@jangreteman.com jangreteman.com #01943630 Judy Webb-Martin 626.688.2273 jwmartin@dppre.com #00541631 Katie Orth 626.688.0418 korth@dppre.com #00942500 Your Story.
