Annual Gala Celebration
Masters Series Theme: Art of
Revolutionary Impressionists
The next term of The Masters Series, presented by the
Pasadena Senior Center for members and nonmembers 50
and older, will focus on 19th century impressionist artists
Tuesdays, April 18 to May 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. via Zoom.
Art historian Katherine E. Zoraster, whose specialty is
art from the Renaissance to the 20th century, will lead
the multimedia sessions with a look at how 19th century
impressionist artists rebelled against standards of the day to
emerge as some of the most influential and beloved artists
of all time. She also will explore impressionists’ styles and
inspirations as well as their intertwined lives, the world in
which they lived and painted and their lasting impact on the
next generation of artists.
Radicals in their time, early impressionists violated the
rules of traditional academic painting. Artists who exemplify
the iconic movement include Edgar Degas, Claude Monet,
Alfred Sisley, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Frédéric Bazille, Mary
Cassatt, Camille Pissarro and others.
Each of the six-week presentations will have a different topic:
April 18: In Advance of Impressionism: Manet, Baudelaire
and “Modern Life”
April 25: Formulations of the Impressionist Movement
May 2: Capturing Fleeting Moments – Monet and Renoir
May 9: Urban landscapes – Degas and Caillebotte
May 16: Women of Impressionism
May 23: Impressionism Abroad
The cost for the series is only $75 for members of the
Pasadena Senior Center and $90 for nonmembers.
To register for the Zoom series, visit www.

more.

Recent Happenings
During the recent rainy weather, Parks and Public Works
maintenance staff worked on the following tasks: removing
fallen tree branches, palm fronds, and other debris from the
public right-of-way; replacing streetlight bulbs and street
signs; performing minor trimming of hanging tree limbs;
repairing pavement; picking up fallen street light globes;
and unclogging storm drains. Staff also worked to ensure
the sandbag self-fill station at Stoneman was replenished
in advance of the storm. Residents who wish to report non-
emergency issues in the public right-of-way or City streets
may do so via the San Marino Service Request Center:
cityofsanmarino.org/report.
Tree Planting
Earlier this month, the Urban Forester held a tree planting
event with Cub Scout Den 1, Pack 354 at Lacy Park. After
Public Works staff prepared the tree planting site, the Cub
Scouts planted 5 purple leaf plum trees in the western
portion of the park. These trees will be a great addition to
the park, and the City would like to thank the Cub Scouts
for their hard work and service to the community. In other
tree-related news, earlier this month Mariposa Landscaping
began work on their public tree planting program, which is
part of the City’s annual tree maintenance program. Public
tree plantings at various locations will be completed within
the next week, and will help the City replenish its robust
urban forest.
Training Updates
The Fire Department continues to focus training efforts on
the department’s four probationary firefighters. Probationary
Firefighters Jimenez and Martinez recently participated
in ventilation training at the Alhambra Training Tower.
Probationary firefighters are evaluated on firefighter and
EMS skills at 4-months, 8-months, and 12-months. After
the 12-month evaluation, probationary firefighters are
assigned a special project to be completed by the end of their
18-month probation.
Meetings
Design Review Committee Meeting
Wednesday, April 5 at 6:00 PM; Barth Room and Zoom
Tickets to Five Acres annual
gala, “The House of Five
Acres,” which will be held
on Saturday, May 20, are
now available. The Altadena-
based children’s foster care
agency is celebrating its
135th birthday and the gala
is inspired by the year the
agency was founded in 1888
during the Victorian era.
Long-time supporters Nicole
Rasic and Trish Gonzales
will serve as co-chairs of the
Five Acres annual gala. Rasic
and Gonzales met years ago
through a mutual friend.
Rasic invited Gonzales to be
her guest at Five Acres’ gala
and the rest is history.
Actors Sam and Amber
Jaeger will serve as the
emcees. Sam Jaeger, who
played Joel Graham on
NBC’s television series
“Parenthood,” showed
support for Five Acres in
2013 during the show’s fifth
season premiere party. He is
a former special friend to a
foster child who was living at
Five Acres and has continued
his involvement with the
charity for 10 years. He can
be seen playing Peter on
Netflix’s “Devil in Ohio,” and
Mark Tuello in Hulu’s “The
Handmaid’s Tale,” to name
a few of his shows. Amber,
Jaeger’s wife, is known for
“Take Me Home,” “Solitary,”
and “After We Leave.”
The annual gala will be
held at the historic estate of
Connie Holguin in Pasadena,
which was built in 1897
and designed by Frederick
Roehrig, American architect
of landmark building Hotel
Green, once the home of the
Tournament of Roses and
the Valley Hunt Club. Castle
Green, which was built as
an annex to Hotel Green,
and the Andrew McNally
House in Altadena were also
designed by Roehrig.
The Victorian era, which was
marked by great change in the
world due to new inventions,
scientific discoveries, and
social change, gave birth to
notable movements. At the
time, orphanages were being
founded to ensure children
were kept safe when they had
no home, were abandoned,
or had a parent who died.
Five Acres opened its doors
as one of those orphanages
that offered safety to the
most vulnerable children.
“Over the course of its
135 years, our community
of supporters have helped
us transform more than
100,000 vulnerable children
and families,” said Jennifer
Berger, Five Acres’ Chief
Advancement Officer.
“Throughout the decades, we
have expanded to focus on
well-being and mental health
while also ensuring that
every child has their own
loving and permanent family.
We are able to advance our
mission with the ongoing
generous support of our
sponsors and underwriters.”

Altadena Library District
Final Redistricting Meeting
To ensure more fair and
representative elections, the
Altadena Library District
committed in 2019 to
establishing five Library
Board of Trustee districts in
Altadena rather than seats
being at-large. The National
Demographics Corporation,
the district’s demographic
consultant, has created three
potential drafts of our future
district map.
Unless further revisions
are needed, the board will
adopt a map at the Board of
Trustees meeting, Monday,
April 24, at 5 p.m. at the
Main Library. We invite you
to provide your feedback,
preference, or suggestions to
