Celebrate National Poetry
Month with Pasadena Library
Pasadena Public Library is
celebrating National Poetry
Month this April with a
variety of opportunities to
hear, write, and engage with
poetry.
The Academy of American
Poets started National
Poetry Month in April 1996
to celebrate poetry’s ability
to capture and enrich our
daily lives. Over the years,
it has become a well-loved
literary celebration. Readers,
students, teachers, librarians,
booksellers, and others
spend April marking poetry’s
significance in our lives. This
April, celebrate the power
of poetry with the Pasadena
Public Library at any one of
our free community events.

In celebration of Earth
Month and its indigenous
roots, the South Pasadena
Public Library will host
a Book to Art Program
featuring Fresh Banana
Leaves by Jessica Hernandez,
Ph.D.. Patrons are invited to
read the book and join us for
an Upcycled Herb Planter
project on Saturday, April
15 at 2:00 PM in the Library
Community Room located at
1115 El Centro Street.
Attendees are encouraged,
but not required to read
Fresh Banana Leaves.
Fresh Banana Leaves
explores how indigenous
science is often ignored and
“otherized” within the realm
of western science and the
negative impact this has on its
communities and the Earth.
Hernandez uses case studies,
historical overviews, and
stories that center the voices
and lived experiences of
indigenous Latin American
women and land protectors
to explain how systemic
colonialism, racism, and
capitalism intersect to keep
indigenous science out of
mainstream environmental
policy and discourse.
The Library plans to bring
these ideas to life by hosting
a free Upcycled Herb
Planter project. All ages are
welcome to join in creating a
sustainable herb garden that
they will be able to take home
and watch grow. All supplies
will be provided, registration
is required. Register for this
event at: southpasadenaca.
gov/register.

is presented by the South
Pasadena Public Library

street resurfacing project is scheduled to begin later this year.
Recent Happenings
Over the past week, Parks and Public Works maintenance
staff worked on the following tasks: removing fallen tree
branches, palm fronds, and other debris from the public
right-of-way; replacing streetlight bulbs and street signs;
performing minor trimming of hanging tree limbs;
repairing pavement; picking up fallen street light globes; and
unclogging storm drains. Staff also worked through the night
during the recent windstorm to ensure prompt response to
any issues that occurred after hours, including fallen trees. In
addition, Public Works provided staff support at the Gooden
Center Run for Recovery last weekend. Residents who wish
to report non-emergency issues in the public right-of-way or
City streets may do so via the San Marino Service Request
Center: cityofsanmarino.org/report.

Symphony’s 22/23 Season
Interim Health Officer Dr.
Eric Handler issued updated
health officer orders related
to COVID-19 vaccination
requirements for healthcare
workers and masking
requirements in healthcare
facilities. The updated
orders took effect last week.
Vaccination: All healthcare
workers must be up to
date with COVID-19
vaccinations by completing
a COVID-19 primary series
and receiving the most
recent booster dose within
15 days of becoming eligible
as recommended by the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC).
Masking: Health care
facility personnel are
required to wear a well-
fitted mask when providing
patient care or working in
patient care areas within all
indoor healthcare settings
such as hospitals, skilled
nursing facilities, clinics,
and hospice facilities. The
Pasadena Public Health
Department (PPHD)
strongly recommends
patients, clients and visitors
to health care settings wear
a mask. Patients, clients and
visitors are required to wear
a mask when the health care
facility is in outbreak status
or there is evidence of high
community transmission
levels, as defined by the CDC,
within Los Angeles County.
The PPHD recommends
wearing a well-fitting, non-
vented N95, KN95 or KF94
respirator.
PPHD is requiring more
protective measures in
healthcare settings. While
the SARS-CoV-2 virus
remains a concern for all
Pasadena residents, the
virus poses a particular
risk to the health of
medically vulnerable
residents and people who
might be exposed through
necessity based on their
circumstances. Pasadena
has a higher per capita
population residing in long-
term care facilities compared
to the rest of Los Angeles
County. Vaccination and
masking requirements are
protective measures which
have effectively reduced
infection rates and protected
vulnerable populations
from COVID-19 related
complications.
PPHD encourages all
Pasadena residents to stay
up to date on vaccines
and boosters, test before
gatherings, seek available
COVID-19 treatments, and
stay home when sick.

Saturday, April 29, with matinee
and evening performances at
2:00pm and 8:00pm. Emerging
international conductor
Kensho Watanabe will make

American in Paris to open the

by Avery Fisher Winner Tai
Murray, whose playing has
been described as “technically
flawless, vivacious and
scintillating” (Muso Magazine).
Grammy-nominated
composer Carlos Simon rounds
out the third annual Composer’s
Showcase with The Block,
inspired by Romare Bearden’s
paintings portraying the rich
energy that Harlem expressed
as the hotbed for African
American culture. Finally,
Rachmaninoff’s final and
arguably best orchestral work,
Symphonic Dances concludes
the program with electrifying
modern rhythms that will keep
audiences on the edge of their
seats. This is one season finale
