SMRFA PROUDLY PRESENTS OUR 2024 ENTRY:

ENCHANTED MUSIC BOX.

This year’s float depicts a carousel-themed music box that invites us all to experience
the enchanted music of childhood and the lovely surprise of a music box. In this magical
scene, one of the carousel horses has taken flight and is soaring off with the music. And
it is not too late for some deserving teens to share in the excitement by riding on the float
and represent SMRFA as a Princess or Ambassador. Application deadline is October
4th. Check SierraMadreRoseFloat.org for details.

SIERRA MADRE POLICE
TO UPDATE BODY AND IN
CAR CAMERA SYSTEM

Police Chief Gus Barrientos and Captain Henry
Amos appeared before the Council on Tuesday,
requesting a state of the art upgrade to the Police
Departments in-can and body worn recording devices.
This request came after the department conducted
a comprehensive analysis of the camera systems
for suitability, dependability, durability, and
functionality. SMPD solicited input from department
personnel, and also received feedback from
neighboring agencies, and Police product vendors.
In addition to various levels of research, the SMPD
field-tested the cameras in phases

According to the staff report, Police officers, community
stakeholders, and criminal justice leaders
(District Attorney’s Office) have encouraged the
implementation of body-worn cameras. The purpose
of cameras is to improve the civility of police-
citizen encounters and enhance citizen perception
of police transparency and legitimacy. The footage
captured is an invaluable tool for officers, prosecutors,
and others in processing evidence and in the
ability to provide a level of transparency with outside
parties that was previously unachievable. T

SMPD requested 25 new Body Worn Cameras and
8 In-Car Cameras to replace the outmoded digital
recorders and Mobile Audio Video (MAV) system
currently in the police vehicles. The necessity to
update and upgrade our current camera systems
is vital as the current equipment is outdated. We
need to replace them with current recording devices
that are more suitable for today’s policing needs,
and the years to come.

After reviewing the cost of the recommended system
and its impact on the current budget, the council
approved the upgrade unanimously.

SIERRA MADREAN TO
COMPETE ON ABC'S

GOLDEN BACHELOR

Sierra Madrean Christina Kempton is on the Golden
Bachelor on ABC which premiered on September
28th.

Christina was selected from 30,000 applicants to be
one of the 22 women vying for Gerry Turner's affections.
Turner is a handsome 72-year-old, Indiana Native
and widower who is looking for love the second
time around.

Christina is a California native and has live in Sierra
Madre for many years. Many of us Sierra Madreans
know and love Christina. She is not only beautiful
with a big heart, but a wonderful mom, grandmother
and friend. Kristen Baldwin from Entertainment
Weekly says “she is literally the coolest contestant to
appear on this franchise ever”.

Christina is active in town and always up to something
fun. If you run into her on the Pickle Ball
courts, hiking the local trails, volunteering at a Cancer
Support Fund Raiser or dancing to live music at
the Buccaneer, be sure to give her a wink and say “Hi”.

There is a viewing party every Thursday night at 8pm
on the back patio at the Buccaneer. Be sure to join in
the fun and help root Christina on!
