MONROVIA NEWS BRIEFS
DUARTE RESIDENTS INVITED TO
PARTICIPATE IN RELAY FOR LIFE
EVENT
The City of Duarte invites residents to participate in
the American Cancer So-ciety Relay for Life of Santa
Anita Park event starting on Saturday, September 7
at 11 AM and ending on Sunday, September 8 at 11 AM. The relay
will take place at Santa Anita Park infield (285 W Huntington
Drive, Arcadia).
The Relay For Life is more than just a fundraising walk. This event
brings to-gether passionate supporters who embody the American
Cancer Society (ACS) vision to end cancer for everyone. This
volunteer-led experience unites communities to celebrate cancer
survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and raise funds
to improve the lives of individuals with cancer and their families
through advocacy, research, and patient support.
Participants will kick off the event by cheering for local survivors
in the first lap of the day, followed by their caregivers and relayers.
After the first laps, survivors will enjoy a luncheon provided by
Chop Stop, Glendale, and musical accompaniment by Larry
DiPeppe, and be presented with a goody bag.
Entertainment will continue throughout the day on the stage as
well as booth sales and raffles, with monies donated to ACS.
At 9 PM, there will be a luminaria lighting ceremony, where
homemade paper lanterns called luminarias are lit in remembrance
of a life touched by cancer. Prior to the ceremony, residents will
have the opportunity to dedicate lumi-narias to a lost loved one,
someone currently battling, or anyone who’s over-come cancer.
Together, participants will take a lap of silence to honor those
affected by cancer.
Throughout the night, movies will be playing on stage and card
games will be available to connect donations.
The following morning at 7 AM, ACS will serve a pancake
breakfast for dona-tion before the closing ceremony, with the
event ending at 11 AM. All of the money raised will be donated to
the American Cancer Society.
