WALKING SIERRA MADRE
The Social Side by Deanne Davis
6-Day Forecast Sierra Madre, Ca.
“It is the month of June, the month of leaves and roses, when pleasant
sights salute the eyes and pleasant scents the noses.” Nathaniel Parker
Willis
“June is the pearl of summer, shining with warmth and joy.” L. M.
Montgomery
“Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.”
Al Bernstein
The picture this week is granddaughter, Emily, enjoying a special Sierra
Madre treat: Blueberry Toast at Coffee JPG. They’re open every
day from 7:30 to 5:00 and in addition to the awesome Blueberry Toast,
you could treat yourself to a Smoked Salmon Tartine, Avocado Toast,
Mango Habanero Roasted Beef Sandwich, a Turkey Pesto Sandwich
and every kind of coffee drink you can imagine. Think Espresso! Cappuccino!
Latte! You can visit them at 142 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Emily
and I highly recommend a visit.
Tomorrow is June 1st. Can you believe it? School is ending all over
the place, Folks are packing their cars for vacations or planning a
stay-cation involving no driving at all. After talking about visiting
Coffee JPG (which must stand for Just Plain Good) I find myself staring
at the rest of this blank page and wondering what you all would
like to read about here.
Continuing to fill this blank page, I thought you’d like to know about the full moon for this month: It’s called the Strawberry
Moon and will best be seen on June 11th at 3:44 a.m. June’s full moon - typically the last full moon of spring or the first of
summer – has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon. While strawberries certainly are a reddish-pink color and
are roundish in shape, the origin of the name Strawberry Moon has nothing to do with the Moon’s hue or appearance. It
celebrates the ripening of wild strawberries and the beginning of summer. Set your alarm and take a look.
Things to celebrate on June 1st:
National Red Rose Day
National Pen Pal Day
World Reef Awareness Day
National Cancer Survivor’s Day
National Say Something Nice Day (that should be every day!)
Dare Day
National Skin Care Day
National Dairy Month
And Monday is National I Love My Dentist Day. I will be seeing mine later this month.
I have about 19 things I should do today which include such stimulating activities as taking out my trash, cleaning my bathroom
and maybe dusting my office as I find I can write my name with my finger on my printer. Instead, I watched the first
episode of “The Librarians” on TNT. I loved this show when it was originally on in 2014. The premise was: The Librarians
are an ancient organization dedicated to protecting an innocent world from a magical and fantasy-like secret reality hidden
from view. (Thank you Wikipedia). In this spinoff of the original series, a Librarian from the past time travels to the present
and finds himself stuck here. When he returns to his castle, which is now a museum, he inadvertently releases magic across
the continent. He is given a new team to help him clean up the mess he made, forming a new team of Librarians. I enjoyed
every minute and will be anxiously awaiting each new episode.
You were probably just as delighted as I was to see that the Sierra Madre 4th of July Parade Grand Marshalls will be our local
heroes, the folks who sprang into action when our community needed them the most during the Eaton Canyon Fire and the
blazes in our canyon. The First Responders from our Fire Department, Police and Public Works. This is such a great thing to
do, to celebrate these awesome people who helped us rise, recover and shine! We are celebrating the heart of Sierra Madre!
Here’s something I read: A mother once asked Albert Einstein how to raise a child to become a genius. Einstein’s advice was
to read fairy tales to the child. “And after that?” the mother asked. “Read the child more fairy tales,” Einstein replied, adding
that what a scientist most needs is a curious imagination. He would have liked “The Librarians,” too!
“Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.” Teddy Roosevelt
