STUART TOLCHIN PUT THE LIGHTS ON

WHO CAN YOU TRUST?

Are you worried about
the future? Forget that;
are you worried about
the present? I try to avoid
such worrying by focusing
on the past. What
mistakes have I made?

What should I have done
differently? Would life have been more fun
if I had become a motorcycle racer or a skydiver or something a little bit more exciting?
Such thinking is ridiculous as I have
become what I have become—someone
who wants to do something significant but
does not know how to begin. I would like to
begin now; but what should I do?

Let me tell you about a book that I am in
the process of reading. The book is The
Undoing Project by Michael Lewis. Undoing
or inaction is something that has caught
my attention over the past couple of weeks.
As I have already written I came up with
the idea of avoiding television and thought
that I could be part of a movement without
moving very much.

 That thought alone seemed humorous
to me, and I avoided television until the
President’s State of the Union speech. Of
course, it would have been great to avoid
that speech, but I didn’t, but the idea of
Not Doing has stayed with me. On SundayI attended a book club meeting at the local
book club that discussed the book MyYear of Rest and Relaxation. The book described
a young attractive woman who during
the first part of this century decided to
go into hibernation. I read the book a few
weeks ago and may have forgotten the end
or perhaps failed to read the last few pages.

I had been under the impression that the
hibernation had been semi-successful and
that the narrator had successfully reclaimed
a deeper experience of herself or somethinglike that. I had forgotten, or never knew,
that the last few pages described the horrific
bombing of the World Trade Center
on September 11, 2001. The last sentence
of the book describes a young woman who

RICH JOHNSON

(Writer’s note: I researched
and intended to focus part
of this column on women
who ran for the presidency. I
soon realized the women’s role

through history was very significant
and I want to devote a whole column to
the topic.)

So…it’s never too early to start analyzing who
our next president should be. Being president is
relatively important, but you might not think so
if you take a closer look at the following factoid:
We choose between 50 choices to become Miss
America. Only 2 choices for president.
Maybe we should consider already well-known
candidates. For example, Clint Eastwood has a
solid two-year record as the Mayor of Carmel,
California. Sure, he might be a wee bit past his
prime, but I’m certain he can still stare down his
adversaries. Maybe we should “make his day!”

Of course, our own terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger
was our governor from 2003 to 2011.
I guess there is a little matter of his not beinga “natural born” citizen. Lawyers tell us there is
currently no universally accepted meaning for
the term “natural-born”. In fact it’s entirely possible
any person born from out of the womb of
a woman would technically be a “natural born”
human. Think about it.

Radio shock Jock Howard Stern ran for the
governorship of New York. His political planks
included reinstating the death penalty, removal
of highway tolls and limit road work to graveyard
hours. He dropped out when the public demanded
to see his personal finances.

Our next contender would be the third president
to come out of the state of Texas. The onlyTexans to occupy the White House were Dwight

D. Eisenhower and Lyndon Baines Johnson.
“Ike” was a Republican and “LBJ” a Democrat.
Our Lone Star State contender would be the first
Oscar winner to occupy the White House. He
almost ran for governor of Texas. He’ll consider
running once his 3 kids graduate from their teen
years. Of course I’m referring to Matthew Mc-
Conaughey. Maybe he’ll throw his 10-gallon hat
into the ring.
There is a Muslim candidate we can encourage

leapt off the seventy-eighth floor of the
building. The leaper is described as “being
awake as she dives into the unknown.” As
I write this now, I am aware that this last
sentence may be a metaphor for the best we
can expect from life.
Perhaps that is what the other three members
of the book club were talking about
and explains why I felt so disconnected
from the conversation. As I was leaving the
bookstore, I noticed books outside which
were there to be picked up free of charge.
I saw the book The UNDOING PROJECT.
The title alone connected to so much that
I had been thinking about. I took the book
and brought it home. Now I have read 223
pages of the 362-page book which I intend
to finish after I finish this article, or
it finishes me. My experience so far of the
Michael Lewis book seems to verify every
thought I have ever had about education
and professional advice.

The book describes a world wherein no
one really knows anything. Not the Doctors,
not the Professors, not even the parents.
Everyone is deluded by their past experiences
and by how they feel in addition
to the belief in their own superiority. Parts
describing how doctors' advice differ depending
on the time of day that the patient
is seen and how much sleep the doctor had
the night before frighten me.
The point, as I understand it, is that everyone
makes mistakes all the time and that
there is no one who can really be trusted to
make correct predictions. For me the message
so far is not to be so hard on ourselves
and to do the best we can do and humorously
tolerate who we are. As we “dive into
the unknown” of our tomorrows we can
try to be as aware as possible and enjoy life
as much as we can. We all know what the
eventual tomorrow will bring.

Whoever you are out there, laugh at future
errors and know that they are inevitable.
Maybe taking the time to read this article
was a mistake or a waste of your time but
for me I feel a connection and thank you.
Now I am going to go back and finish the
book and wonder what more it has to say.

POTENTIAL 2028 PRESIDENTIAL
CONTENDERS

to run. He ran for the Senate in Pennsylvania as a
Republican and lost to John Fetterman. Our candidate
is a graduate of Harvard and you know
him as Dr. Oz. First name? Mehmet.

Caitlin Jenner ran as a Republican hoping to
replace Gavin Newsom as governor of California
She describes herself as a “compassionate
disruptor”. She lost the governor race by a slim
margin. She had 1% of the vote.

Now, a candidate whom a recent poll found
46% of Americans would support his candidacyfor president. And his last name makes him very
electable. If elected he would be the third “Johnson”
to reside in the White House. Of course
I’m referring to Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.
(You didn’t think it was me, did you?) Dwayne
has been thinking about running since 2017. He
certainly would have a different perspective on
“wrestling” with important issues.

Easily the largest and biggest president would
be our own Shaquille O’Neal. He has toyed with
running for Sheriff in his local hometown. Secret
ballot and all that stuff. Maybe he and the
“Rock” could run on the same ticket.

Finally, had I not moved out to California in
9th grade, I would have been a fellow classmate
with this formidable contender. The school?
Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The graduating class of 1969 would have
included yours truly and our viable presidential
candidate. In fact, this noble candidate has already
served as the governor of Minnesota. Of
course I’m talking about Jesse Ventura. Again,
he and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson could be on
the same ticket. Talk about a smackdown of epic
proportions.

We’ve just scratched the surface of viable contenders.
My closing remarks:

In conclusion, during any election cycle I’m
left, right, and confused. I’ve learned in politics
that the policy often changes but the confusion
remains.

If you are on the right you know leftists love
sharing – especially opinions. If you are on the
left…well you know…reverse.

Finally when it comes to voting I thought I was
indecisive, now I’m not so sure.

 Have a great week!

HOWARD Hays As I See It

“The decision to put American servicemembers in harm’s way demands
clarity, consistency, and honesty with Congress and the public.
So far, we’ve got none of those things.” - Senator Mark Warner (D-VA)

to do, and then making his administration
go and find whatever argument they
could make to justify it.” As for whatever
responsibility Trump bears himself, Sen.
Tim Kaine (D-VA) wonders, “Is he too
mentally incapacitated to realize that we
had a diplomatic agreement with Iran that
was keeping its nuclear program in check,
until he ripped it up during his first term?”

Secretary of State Rubio offered another
reason for our involvement: once Israel
launched its own strikes, Iran would retaliate
by attacking U.S. interests in the region.
We needed to attack alongside Israel, then,
to counter such “imminent threat”. Sen.
Angus King (I-ME) asked, “Have we now
delegated the most solemn decision that
can be made in our society, the decision to
go to war, to another country? That’s the
implication, the breathtaking implication
of Secretary Rubio’s statement.” Preparation
for the attacks had been ongoing for
months. But for the thousands of Americans
now stranded in the Mideast with
airports and airspace closed, Trump says
there was no evacuation plan because this
“happened all very quickly”.

For the “why”, Rachel Maddow suggests
looking to see who most benefits.
The ones most threatened by Iran, who’d
benefit most from these attacks, would be
gulf states like the U.A.E., Qatar and Saudi
Arabia. When Sen. Lindsey Graham (RSC)
was asked by NBC about new leadership
for Iran, he said he’d discussed it with
Crown Prince Mohhamed bin Salman
of Saudi Arabia – as if he should have
any say in the matter. (As to the murder
and dismemberment of journalist Jamal
Khashoggi ordered by the Crown Prince,
Sen. Graham seems content to just let that
slide.)

It was Saudia Arabia, along with Israel,
pushing Trump to commit U.S. forces to
a new war. Qatar gave Trump that $400
million tricked-out Boeing 747. Saudi
Arabia fronted Jared Kushner $2 billion
in seed money for his investment firm.

U.A.E. put $2 billion into the Trump
crypto outfit in which Steve Witkoff ’s sons
are partners. Now Kushner and Witkoff
represent our country in talks with Iran,
ultimately reporting to the president that
these talks weren’t going anywhere so it’s
time for war.
All this while United Arab Emirates,
Qatar and Saudi Arabia show their appreciation
to Trump by funding Paramount
Skydance’s prevailing offer over Netflix
in acquiring Warner Bros Discovery - assuring
Trump’s gang would now be calling
the shots at CNN. This would be the significant
story I’d focus on this week had I
not learned, barely into the second year of
Trump’s second term in office, that we are
at war.

I had what I thought

was an important

story to focus on this

week: Paramount

Skydance prevailing

over Netflix in acquir

ing Warner Bros Discovery. The price was

too high for Netflix and besides, President

Trump had already chosen the winner –

assuring his gang would now be calling the

shots at CNN. Paramount didn’t have the

money, either – but was backed by CEO

David Ellison’s dad Larry (net worth $200

billion) along with reliable Trump funders

United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Ara

bia and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Now

we’re likely to see CNN warming to Trump

as we’ve been seeing with CBS.

I thought this would be the most signifi

cant story I could focus on this week but

then learned, barely into the second year

of Trump’s second term in office, that we

are at war.

The immediate question was, why? We

were told talks had broken down between

our country and Iran – they’d refused to

agree not to develop nuclear weapons,

when in fact they’d agreed not to - repeat

edly. As important as these talks were, we

didn’t send State Department profession

als – but instead the aforementioned Jared

Kushner and real estate developer Steve

Witkoff, whose sons are partners in the

Trump crypto firm.

Last January, Trump vowed to “rescue”

protestors in Iran; we were “ready to go”

should any be executed, assuring “help is

on the way”. Whatever “help” came too

late for the thousands killed. Trump now

called for those protestors to reclaim their

country – but then clarified his intent was

to cede control to someone from the cur
