ST. PATRICK’S DAY —
SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE
TO GO ACROSS THE STREET
With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, some diners may wish
Pasadena had a traditional Irish restaurant — the kind with
dark wood interiors, hearty stews, and a bartender pouringGuinness as if it were a sacred ritual.
But as my father often reminded me, you don’t
always have to cross the ocean to find a festive meal.
Sometimes you just have to go across the street.
That sentiment rings especially true this time of year, when
local taverns and neighborhood favorites step up to provide
the holiday spirit.
A good example is T. Boyle’s Tavern, just off Colorado near Mentor. Longtime locals still
remember when it was Toe’s Tavern, and like any bar with staying power, the name may
change but the stories at the counter remain the same. Today it offers a comfortable sports-
tavern vibe, plenty of beer on tap, and an easygoing atmosphere perfect for celebrating St.
Patrick’s Day — especially with March Madness right around the corner.
Over in Sierra Madre, Lucky Baldwin’s continues to give locals a reliable taste of pub culture.
This year’s featured holiday special is aptly named the “Pot of Gold,” available through St.
Patrick’s Day. With its relaxed patio, friendly crowd, and strong beer selection, it remains
one of the San Gabriel Valley’s most dependable gathering spots for a festive toast.
Meanwhile, back in Sierra Madre, Casa Del Rey is embracing the holiday in its own
Southern California style. My research suggests green margaritas will be the celebratorydrink of choice — proof that here in our part of the world, even Irish traditions can take
on a colorful Mexican twist. Given the restaurant’s lively energy and reputation for strong
cocktails, it’s a safe bet the mood will be upbeat.
The takeaway is simple. While we may not have a classic Irish restaurant in Pasadena, we
are fortunate to have neighborhood taverns and local establishments that understand the
importance of hospitality.
On St. Patrick’s Day, the menu may vary — pints, cocktails, tacos, or tavern burgers — but
the goal remains the same: good service, familiar faces, and a welcoming place to raise a
glass.
This year, skip the transatlantic fantasy.
Sometimes the best celebration is just across the street.
