Recipients 

Two more students picked up scholarships from

Duarte Kiwanis Club this summer. Eva Huang will

be studying Fashion Merchandising at PCC and

Stephanie Carillo will be studying Criminal Justice at

Cal State LA.

ARCADIA TEEN GIVES FREE SWIM 
LESSONS TO NEURODIVERGENT 
KIDS, 150+ TAUGHT SINCE 2022 


The Float Initiative nonprofit focuses on providing

free one-on-one adaptive swimming lessons to 

neurodivergent children in the San Gabriel Valley. Since 

its start, the organization has taught over 150 kids with

400+ lessons creating an environment for neurodivergent

children where, “each session is one-on-one and sensory-

friendly, built on positive reinforcement with a curriculum

tailored to each child.”

of 9 years and coach at Arcadia Swim Club, Sebastian

Chen, founded the organization in 2022. After his

neurodivergent neighbor, who’d he grown up with, nearly

drowned, this moment had changed what the pool had

meant to him and began to form the Float Initiative. 
“The water had always been the safest place in the world

for me, and it clearly wasn’t for kids who needed that safety 

most ", said Chen. “Keeping children like my neighbor

safe in the water became my mission, so that year I

started offering free weekly one-on-one lessons, and Float

Initiative grew from there. Honestly, teaching these kids

has become more fulfilling than competing ever was.”

The organization hopes to bring safety awareness and belonging to the community. According to the American Journal

of Public Health, children on the autism spectrum are 160 times more likely to drown than their peers. Chen shares 

that adaptive one-on-one instruction is often expensive or hard to find, “so every Float lesson is free, and our 

benchmark for every student is one full lap of unassisted freestyle, the level linked to water survivability.” 

“I want families to feel that the pool is a place where their kids are welcome, and I hope Float shows other students that the

skills we build in sports can be put to work for our neighbors,” says Chen. 

With various parent testimonials, the impact that the Float Initiative has among the community and the kids taught is

apparent. 

"Dylan came home so excited that he was still overjoyed into the evening. I asked him why he was so happy, and he said

it's because Sebastian makes him swim better. Previously, with other swim instruction, it was hard for Dylan to get his

arms out of the water. Now, he can actually get his body up. I'm surprised Sebastian can make such a difference! Very

proud of him”, said Float Initiative parent, Mrs. Donna. 

The organization has 10 volunteer instructors and parents can sign up at floatinitiative.org, floatinitiative501c3@gmail.

com, or call (626) 698-9723. They’ll schedule weekly lessons around your availability. Sponsors may donate pool time

and many families host lessons in their backyard pools. Float Initiative can go wherever each child feels most comfortable.
