 “This is the first election in America 
since the full impact of Obamacare 
has been felt. This is the first chance 
people have had to speak clearly at 
the ballot box about the impact this 
law is having on their lives and on 
our economy.”

 The people did speak clearly, and state Atty. Gen. 
Cuccinelli was defeated last Tuesday by Democrat 
Terry McAuliffe. If the election were some 
referendum on the Obama Administration, it was 
welcomed as such by McAuliffe – who campaigned 
with the president the weekend before the election.

 Terry McAuliffe was not the sort to engender 
mass support on his own; wealthy businessman, 
ultimate Washington insider, former Chair of the 
DNC.

 As polling by the Washington Post showed, 
however, this election was not so much a 
referendum on the president and “Obamacare”, but 
on the dogmatic right. As the race began, Cuccinelli 
was favored as he positioned himself as somewhat 
moderate. His loss became inevitable as opponents 
brought up positions he’d taken over a decade in 
politics – positions he refuses to disavow.

 Cuccinelli opposed abortion even in cases of 
rape and incest, backed forced closure of women’s 
health clinics, and sought defunding of Planned 
Parenthood and embryonic stem cell research. 
He opposed amending the state’s sodomy laws 
to exempt conduct between consenting adults in 
private. 

 He’s pushed for state and federal constitutional 
amendments to ban same-sex marriage and “civil 
unions”, and rescind those already in place. During 
a campaign debate at Virginia Tech, site of a 2007 
mass shooting where 32 were killed, he bragged 
of his “A” rating from the NRA and opposition to 
background checks. 

 State courts blocked Cuccinelli, an avid global-
warming denier, from engaging in an “illegal fishing 
expedition” seeking to discredit a leading climate 
scientist at the University of Virginia. Virginia’s 
inspector general accused a Cuccinelli subordinate 
of “inappropriately” helping a Pennsylvania energy 
company fight off a class-action suit by Virginia 
landowners – after the company made campaign 
contributions in six-figures to Cuccinelli.

 This race’s outcome was preordained last year. 
Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling was seen as the 
more moderate “establishment” favorite for the 
Republican nomination for governor. Tea-baggers 
on the state party’s central committee, however, 
changed the rules so rather than a state-wide 
primary deciding the nominee, which favored 
Bolling, the decision would be made at a convention 
– controlled by tea-baggers who’d pick one of their 
own.

 Cuccinelli wasn’t helped by the running mate also 
chosen at that convention, Baptist minister E.W. 
Jackson, picked to succeed Bolling as Lieutenant 
Governor. Jackson warned that President Obama 
would force schools to “teach all children about 
homosexuality” (and behavior that “poisons 
culture”), suggested government programs caused 
more harm to African Americans than slavery, 
compared Planned Parenthood (unfavorably) to 
the KKK and wrote that yoga can leave one open to 
Satanic possession.

 Jackson proclaimed last May that “we will win 
the hearts and minds of our people and we will save 
this commonwealth and save this country”. He lost 
to Democratic State Sen. and pediatric neurologist 
Ralph Northam (who hardly had to campaign) by a 
solid ten points.

 This wasn’t so much a fight between competing 
ideologies as an affirmation that, in a historically 
conservative swing-state like Virginia, support for 
women’s access to reproductive healthcare, marriage 
equality, background checks for gun purchases, 
healthcare reform and science-based policy are 
mainstream positions.

 (It also doesn’t help to celebrate a federal 
government shutdown in a state bordering our 
nation’s capital.)

 The race for New York City mayor was decided 
at last September’s primary, when the “moderates” 
lost to a true progressive. Public advocate and 
former councilmember Bill de Blasio had spent his 
career working for the empowerment of all the city’s 
residents, not just relying on the benevolence of 
Wall Street billionaires.

 Many were unfamiliar with the Italian-American 
de Blasio’s family when a TV ad appeared featuring 
a black teenager with a large Afro praising the 
candidate’s positions on affordable housing and the 
NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy. “Bill de Blasio will 
be a mayor for every New Yorker, no matter where 
they live or what they look like”, said the young man, 
“and I’d say that even if he weren’t my dad.” 

 De Blasio’s African-American wife Chirlane 
and two kids became stars of the campaign, with 
eighteen-year-old daughter Chiara introducing 
her father at one event by assuring the crowd he 
isn’t “some boring white guy who just didn’t know 
what he was talking about.” As for son Dante’s 
hair, President Obama commented at a campaign 
appearance he “has the same hairdo I had in 1978, 
although I have to confess my Afro was never that 
good.”

 New Jersey tea-baggers won’t forgive Republican 
Gov. Chris Christie for having met with President 
Obama last year amidst the devastation of Hurricane 
Sandy to discuss federal aid in the recovery. Fox 
News won’t forget the governor’s “Are you nuts?” 
reaction when they asked at the time if he’d arrange 
a similar photo-op for candidate Mitt Romney.

 In the victory speech following his landslide 
reelection, Gov. Christie recalled how four years ago 
folks in New Jersey thought “government was just 
there to take from them but not to give to them, not 
to work with them, not to work for them. Well, four 
years later, we stand here tonight showing that it is 
possible to put doing your job first.”

 National Democrats chose not to become 
involved in the race, passing up the opportunity to 
get in some early jabs at someone assumed to be a 
front-runner for the 2016 Republican presidential 
nomination.

 Contrary to the sacrosanct tenets of the tea-
baggers, Gov. Christie ran on his record of having 
used government as a means of improving peoples’ 
lives. With that kind of record, regardless of 
conservative bona fides, he’d probably never get the 
nomination, anyway.


TAKE AIM AT THE REAL ENEMY

While we watch the S.S. Obamacare sink beneath 
the waves, and while we watch the White House 
explain why its signature legislative "achievement" 
is not the titanic disaster we all knew it would be, 
I have some advice for my fellow Republicans.

Shut up. 

Quit shooting Cruz missiles at each other. 

And take aim at the real enemy -- the Democrats 
and their awful agenda for America.

We can't blame John McCain, Lindsey Graham 
and the other anti-Ted Cruz senators for 
what they said or did during the government 
shutdown. 

What they thought about defunding or delaying 
Obamacare -- or what they said to the media -- 
was irrelevant.

The only thing that really mattered was how those 
senators would have voted on the bills the House 
of Representatives sent over to the Senate. 

And we can't blame them for not successfully defunding 
Obamacare when Harry Reid never even 
gave them a chance to vote on anything.

I'm not happy with McCain, Graham and a lot 
of other Republican senators in Washington who 
often speak and act like they've received brain 
transplants from members of The New York 
Times editorial board.

But I'm still 100 times happier with our least-
conservative Republican senator than I would be 
with any Democrat that's out there. 

Whatever their faults, McCain and the others saw 
the reality written on the wall. They knew Reid 
wasn't going to bring anything up for a vote that 
would jeopardize Obamacare. And they knew if 
he did, President Obama quickly would have vetoed 
it.

In the Republican House, it was the same story. 
Majority Leader John Boehner was blasted by 
conservatives but he did his best. 

When he tried to explain the facts of life to the 
Tea Partiers in his caucus, they didn't believe 
him. Yet after that, Boehner still did everything 
the Republican suicide caucus asked him to do. 

Everything Republicans have been saying about 
the dangers of Obamacare is right, but we can't 
keep attacking our own people.

The GOP is not big enough. We've always been a 
minority party. We can't afford to keep throwing 
our fellow Republicans under the bus, when we 
should be figuring out how to put more people on 
the Republican bus. 

We Republicans need to wise up. We need to dismiss 
our circular political 
firing squad, get in a 

straight line, take aim at 
the real enemy and start 
blasting away. 

We need to replace Reid, 
Chuck Schumer and every 
Democrat senator we can. Fighting among 
ourselves is not getting the GOP anywhere. Look 
at the last election. 

The Tea Party sent up conservative candidates 
in primaries in Indiana, Nevada and Connecticut 
who beat Republican incumbents but then 
lost in the general elections. One of them was an 
ex-witch. 

Now there's a real long-term winning strategy for 
the GOP.

If it's going to primary a Republican senator they 
think is insufficiently conservative, the Tea Party 
wing has to make sure its candidates can win in 
the fall elections. 

Otherwise it's just being really stupid -- and we 
end up with a Democrat Senate and unstoppable 
legislative monstrosities like the Affordable Care 
Act.

If Republicans really want to change things for 
the better, if we really want to save America from 
the Democrats and Obamacare, we have to win 
back the Senate. 

To do that, Republicans need to quit fighting each 
other, call off their civil war and start fighting the 
real enemy of freedom -- the Democrat Party.

The political reality is simple: The 2013 Senate is 
run by the Democrats. Harry Reid never brings 
up a vote that he disagrees with. And until Republicans 
take control of the Senate, nothing will 
change.

So don't blame Boehner or McCain -- or any of 
the Republicans in the House or Senate -- for the 
Obamacare fiasco. Blame Obama and the Democrats. 
And replace them.
