TIPS FOR SMART MEDIA USE FOR KIDS

SCHOOL DIRECTORY

(StatePoint) From TV to smart phones to
social media, our lives are dominated by
24/7 media exposure. Despite this, many
children and teens have few rules around
their media use.

While media consumption by itself is not
the leading cause of any health problem
in the U.S., it can contribute to numerous
health risks, say experts. At the same time,
kids can learn many positive things from
“pro-social” media. The key is to teach children
to make healthy media choices.

“It is time for a renewed commitment to
change the way we address media use,” says
Dr. Thomas K. McInerny, president of the
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
“In the same way you may need to guide
children on how to eat nutritiously, you can
foster a healthy media diet.”

In a digital world ever in flux, the AAP is
offering some key tips for families looking
to make smarter media choices:

• Make a media use plan, including mealtime
and bedtime “curfews” for media devices.
Media use plans take into account not
only the quantity, but the quality and location
of media use. Screens should be kept
out of kids’ bedrooms.

• Excessive media use has been associated
with obesity, lack of sleep, school problems,
aggression and other behavior issues. Limit
entertainment screen time to less than one
or two hours per day.

• For children under 2, substitute unstructured
play and human interaction for screen
time. The opportunity to think creatively,
problem solve and develop reasoning and
motor skills is more valuable for the developing
brain than passive media intake.

• Take an active role in your children’s media
education by co-viewing programs with
them and discussing values. You may consider
having your own profile on the social
media sites your children use. By “friending”
your kids, you can monitor their online
presence.

• Keep the computer in a public part of your
home, so you can check on what your kids
are doing online and how much time they
are spending there.

• Look for media choices that are educational,
or teach good values -- such as empathy,
racial and ethnic tolerance -- and interpersonal
skills.

• If you’re unsure of the quality of the “media
diet” in your household, consult with
your children’s pediatrician on what your
kids are viewing, how much time they are
spending with media, and privacy and safety
issues associated with social media and
Internet use.

More healthy media tips for families can be
found at www.healthychildren.org.

A healthy media diet balances the risks of
too much media on your child’s growth and
progress with some of the pro-social benefits
media offer. Be mindful of how your
children interact with media and take steps
for healthful choices.

PASADENA UNIFIED
INVITES COMMUNITY
TO FIRST CHOICE
FESTIVAL

Families encouraged to explore
options, find best educational fit

Pasadena, CA --- Making the choice
on where to send a child to school
can be a daunting and stressful task
for families. To make this decision
a little easier, the Pasadena Unified
School District (PUSD) will be hosting
the inaugural First Choice Festival
January 14, 2014 from 4:30 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m. at the PUSD Education
Center, 351 South Hudson Avenue
(Corner of Hudson Avenue and Del
Mar Boulevard), in Pasadena. The
First Choice Festival will be a one
stop shop for parents and the community
to meet and speak to representatives
from every PUSD school.

 Whether families are considering a
PUSD signature program school or
simply want to learn more about the
campus down the block, this festival
is an opportunity to find the best
educational fit for each individual
family.

“I would like to invite residents
of Altadena, Pasadena and Sierra
Madre to the festival to learn more
about their public schools and the
exciting programs that are being offered,”
said PUSD Superintendent
Jon R. Gundry. “The First Choice
Festival will showcase the multitude
of educational options in PUSD, including
programs that prepare students
with global and enduring skills
for the 21st century.”

At the festival there will be information
and presentations about PUSD
signature programs such as Mandarin
and Spanish Dual Language Immersion,
International Baccalaureate,
College & Career Pathways, and
the district’s new magnet schools.
There will also be activities for kids,
information about preschool and
afterschool programs, and free immunizations
required for students
to attend school (for uninsured or
Medi-Cal eligible children). Festival
attendees can enter a raffle to win
a family membership to Kidspace
Museum or a full scholarship to the
Pasadena Educational Foundation
Summer Enrichment Program.

The timing of the festival coincides
with the district’s Open Enrollment
process which runs from January
9-February 6. Open Enrollment is
an opportunity for district students
to apply to a school other than the
one they attended in 2013-2014 or
for those enrolling in PUSD for the
first time and interested in applying
to a school other than their neighborhood
school. Staff will be available
at the festival to help parents
complete the online Open Enrollment
application. Open Enrollment
applications can also be submitted
online at openenrollment.info.

More information about the festival
will be posted at gopusd.com/firstchoice
or call 626-396-3606.

We’d like to hear from you!

PET OF THE WEEK

DOTTIE: ANIMAL ID #A4662348

Puppies do not get any more adorable than Dottie (A4662348)!
Dottie is a bubbly one-year-old liver and white female Dalmatian
mix puppy who came to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center
as a stray on December 21st. Weighing 42 pounds, Dottie loves
attention from people and other dogs. She is a fun and silly girl
who will benefit from additional leash and obedience training.
With a medium-high energy level, Dottie will thrive in an active
household, and we think she will love to play with kids.

This sweet girl is a bundle of fun. To see a video of Dottie, please
visit the following link: http://youtu.be/OBhu8DfbjDE

To meet Dottie in person, please see her at the Baldwin Park
Shelter, located at 4275 N. Elton, Baldwin Park, CA 91706 (Phone:
626-430-2378 or 626-962-3577). She is currently available now.
For any inquiries about Dottie, please reference her animal ID
number: A4662348. The shelter is open seven days a week, 12
pm-7 pm Monday-Thursday and 10am-5pm Friday-Sunday. This
is a high-intake shelter with a great need for adoptions. For more
information about Dottie or the adoption process, contact United
Hope for Animals Volunteer Adoption Coordinator Samantha at
