On August 1st, block parties were held all over town, sponsored by the variousNeighborhood Watch programs and participants. SMPD made the rounds visiting all the sites with Officers, Cadets, CSO’s andVolunteers, This gave the residents and PD the opportunity to‘share great food, visit with longtime friends and meet new ones’. Congratulations and Thanks to all who participated! FROM THE SIERRA MADRE FIRE DEPARTMENT: A very Special Thank you to Angeles National Forest Service, Los Angeles County, Arcadia, and Pasadena Fire Departments for lending a hand on July 25th during a brush fire which threatened homes near the Mt. Wilson Trail, triggering voluntary evacuations. The fire broke out around 3:10 pm and burned 3 acres before the spread was haulted. No injuries or buildings were lost due to the fire. Sierra Madre is a town with lots of friends and supporters, especially the Sierra Madre Library. As reported last month (http:// mtnviewsnews.com/v11/htm/n28/index.htm), the city’s historic Library is in desperate need of an upgrade. Rather than attempt what has been determined to be a very costly renovation of theexisting building, a proposal has been put forth to develop a newcivic complex. The proposed “Sierra Madre Library and Cultural Center”, is being considered at the site of the existing RecreationCenter on E. Sierra Madre Blvd. It has also been proposed that theproject should be primarily financed by selling the existing Libraryand adjacent property. This idea has sparked a great deal of controversy from those whoeither don’t want the Library to abandon its existing site, don’t wantthe Library to move to the other side of town or don’t want theproperty to be sold for fear of what might be developed on it. The plan does have the unanimous support of the Library Board ofTrustees as well as by the Friends of the Library, however. The ‘Friends’ are a group of volunteers that contribute volunteer hours, materials, A FOND FAREWELL Former SMVFD member Gordon Caldwell, 93, leaves the Congregational Church for the last time headed toward Sierra Madre’s PioneerCemetary. His body was transported on a vintage fire truck similar to ‘Snorty’ an old fire engine that was used by the Fire Department duringCaldwell’s tenure. He was bid farewell to an overflow crowd at the church. The Eulogy was performed by his former Pastor and dear friend Rev. Dick Anderson. This forum will be held at the Hart Park House in Memorial Park. For years, residents of Sierra Madre enjoyedmanagement of their own Water Company whichprovided a plentiful and pristine water supply toresidents. However, for the last five years or so, challenges with aging infrastructure, water quality, water conservation, the buildingmoratorium as it relates to water, and water rates, not to mention the California Drought, have been frontand center. The city has taken many proactiveand sometimes reactive steps toaddress these issues, however, CityManager Gabe Engeland realizesthat a great many questions onexactly what the status of the city’swater issues remain on resident’s mind. This forum will hopefully answer those questions. (Please note: If attendance exceeds the capacity of the Hart Park House, themeeting will be moved to the CityCouncil Chambers at City Hall.) For additional information, call 626-355-7135. and money to strengthen Sierra Madre Library programs and services. Each year the Friends sponsor a gala wine tasting, noteworthy booksales, and a prestigious art fair. It is from those funds that a donation of $100,000 was given to the city. The purpose of this donation is to obtain preliminary architecturaldrawings as well as official appraisals of the value of the current libraryproperty and the adjacent city-owned lot. Preliminary architecturaldesigns will also be used in the process of producing any necessaryCEQA or related reports. The Friends of the Library Board actually had already approved$100,000 to be used for professional architectural, engineering, and/ or related service for the renovation of the existing Library building. They have since clarified that these same funds should be used instead to support the proposed new facility as an alternative. Procurement of architectural and appraisal services will be advertised through theCity’s regular public bid process. S.
