I usually don’t think much about this as I’m generally focused on the environmental, political, public safety, and potential further nuclear mishaps facing us today. A few weeks ago, after my grandchild’s miraculous birth to her 45 year old mother, I attended the bat mitzvah of my 13 year old grandniece. When my wife and I arrived we were stopped from entering the Temple by a guard armed with a very large firearm. He asked why we were at the Temple and to identify the honoree. Later it was explained to me that this armed protectorship was now a standard precaution at identifiable Jewish events. There were two events scheduled. A morning service and later a party mainly for the celebrant and her friends. My preconception was that the service would be very serious and would contain readings and prayers in Hebrew. I was correct about the service during which my wife, son, and I were invited to participate in the ceremony by being called to the altar and instructed to place the Torah Scroll back into the ark. With some anxiety we followed the Rabbi’s lead then returned to our seats to listen to the speech of my thirteen year old great niece. She spoke rapidly and softly both in Hebrew and in English. Unfortunately I did not understand a word. I do not know any Hebrew and my hearing is so bad that I couldn’t understand the English. Her speech was very well-received and I very much wanted to know what was said. A few days later I obtained a copy of the English part of the speech and it was well worth the trouble. The speech focused on the Commandments and struggled with an understanding of why God allowed humans to experience so many unpleasant feelings. Why when there was really no earthly reason for her to have negative feelings did she experience jealousy, anger, and dislike of other people? Why didn’t God, who controlled everything, not allow her to accept herself and other people just as they are. She determined that God was teaching her a lesson by asking her to focus on the good (God) in everyone and everything. That God wanted her to see Him in the movement of the clouds in her sister’s laugh, in the movement of pets, in everything. She said that she felt strange about having so many toys when she understood that there were other kids of her age who had no toys. She created a project wherein she and some of her friends collected a whole bunch of the toys that they’d outgrown and attempted to present these toys as a gift to a shelter that they located. Sadly, the toys could not be accepted because of the expense associated with properly sterilizing them. This didn’t stop her. She learned from the family’s Housekeeper that toys could be put to use in Guatemala and the toys were donated to a project which would result in there being given to kids in Central America. I was inspired when I read this speech but upon reflection it should not have surprised me. At the evening celebration there was wild continuous dancing accompanied by loud music. This family and their guests seemed to really know how to have a good time. I held back and observed until a woman about my age and half my size took my hand and brought me out to join the dancers. This woman was the paternal grandmother of the speech maker and when I tried to tell her who I was she told me kind of gaily that she didn’t know who I was or anyone was or even where she was. She said that we should just listen to the music and keep dancing and have a good time while we still could. Later I learned from my sister that her mother-in-law was afflicted with dementia and often didn’t recognize her own family. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop her from leading a pretty full and active life. Life I guess can be seen as a continual overcoming of obstacles. I believe this was the actual theme of the speech given by my grand niece: make a room safe for celebration but celebrate anyway. She told us that God wanted us to see the good in everything and that life is about meeting this continual challenge. Sometimes it’s even necessary to hire armed guards. Sometimes I worry that I lack religious faith but the miracle is that others have more than enough faith to go around. Really if we, and our future generations all survive for a while it really will be a Miracle.
