MACARONI KID ACT OF KINDNESS WEEK

Books for children to be hidden throughout community

September 28 through October 5, 2019, Macaroni Kid Publishers across the country are hosting
events that give back to their communities. Macaroni Kid Arcadia, Monrovia, Temple City & Sierra
Madre is participating this year by leaving books at parks, businesses, and events for children to
find and enjoy.

Celebrating literacy and paying it forward, books will be ‘hidden’ throughout the Foothill Communities
for children to find. Young readers can enjoy the book as long as they would like, keep it,
or rehide it when they are done with it for another child to enjoy. The parents of the book finders
are encouraged to share the story of how they found the book on social media and use the hashtags
#mkaok #mackidarcadia.

"I am thrilled to use our local Macaroni Kid platform to spread the love of literacy and kindness
throughout our communities, while also being part of a larger national movement. It’s amazing
and encouraging to see hundreds of publishers throughout the country positively impacting their
communities during the same week," says Kathy E., Macaroni Kid Publisher for Arcadia, Monrovia,
Temple City & Sierra Madre.

Macaroni Kid Act of Kindness Week is an annual nationwide celebration which occurs on the third
week in September. Over the past years, Macaroni Kid Publishers raised $50,000 for local charities,
donated more than 35,000 diapers to families in need, encouraged hundreds of kids to sign anti-
bullying pledges, cleaned dozens of parks and trails and delivered more than 3,000 handwritten
cards to first responders.

MONEY TIP FOR STUDENTS, OCTOBER 2019

Time to start repaying student loans

If you finished college in May and have federal student loans, it’s almost time to start repaying them.
These tips from KHEAA may help.

One of the smartest things you can do is pay more than your scheduled amount. If you ask your
lender to apply the extra to the principal, you’ll pay less interest over the life of your loan.

Several plans are available. The standard repayment plan calls for equal monthly payments over 10
years. The minimum monthly payment is usually $50. Other options include:

• Graduated repayment, with lower amounts that get higher over the 10-year period.

• Income-driven repayment plans, with monthly amounts based on income and family size.
Some plans forgive the balance if you make on-time payments for a certain time.

• Pay As You Earn, if you received no loans before Oct. 1, 2007, and at least one loan after
Sept. 30, 2011.

You’ll probably pay more interest over the life of the loan if you use any option other than standard
repayment. Also, you may have to pay taxes on any amount that is forgiven.

Remember that the federal government can change repayment programs at any time.

KHEAA is a public, non-profit agency established in 1966 to improve students’ access to college. It
provides information about financial aid and financial literacy at no cost to students and parents.
KHEAA also helps colleges manage their student loan default rates and verify information submitted
on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To learn more about those services,
