CREATIVE ARTS GROUP LAUNCHES BACK TO
SCHOOL YOUTH
CLASSES

When parents started calling in
mid-July, Creative Arts Group
realized that the community
of Sierra Madre had needs that
were not yet being met. With
schools not going back in person,
there was clearly an interest
in art classes that could help
children express themselves in
this complicated time. “We want
to give children a chance to be
children,” says Executive Director
Kristin Naran. “Creativity is an
important part of growing up.
We want to provide, in a safe way,
some normalcy.”

In June, Creative Arts Group
transformed what was once an
empty driveway into a thriving
outdoor studio. Starting the
week of August 17, CAG will
be offering a 5-week ‘Back to
School’ Session for children ages
5-14 in their new shaded, open-
air studio. With the sail shades
and misters overhead cooling the
air and everyone wearing masks,
the new studio is a comfortable
and socially distanced outdoor
environment welcoming to all.

The 5-week session includes classes
and workshops in clay, papier
mache, painting, drawing, origami,
tile painting and mosaic.

For more information and to
sign up for classes, please see the
Creative Arts Group website (www.
creativeartsgroup.org) or give the
office a call (626-355-8350).

LOS ANGELES COUNTY WILL NOT CONSIDER SCHOOL

RE-OPENING WAIVERS, PER STATE GUIDANCE

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will adhere to new guidance from the
California Department of Public Health, which recommends that Counties with case rates at
or above 200 cases per 100,000 residents do not extend waivers for the re-opening of classroom
instruction for students in grades TK- 6.

Los Angeles County’s case rate currently is 355 per 100,000 and we will not be considering
waiver applications, at this point in time.

We know that to many families, this is a disappointing announcement, but it’s based on the
existing science and data that is guiding all of our decision-making. We need to ensure the
health and safety of our children, school teachers and staff and all of their families.

This decision will be reconsidered once the case rate falls to the levels recommended by the
State.

The Department of Public Health will continue to work with all of our partners across the
County to implement the infection control strategies we know effectively reduce community
transmission and case rates so that schools can re-open for in-person instruction as soon as
the data and science tell us it’s safe to do so.

While all schools, public and private, across the County are closed for in-person instruction of
students, teachers, staff and administrators are allowed to return to school buildings provided
adults adhere to existing protocols that require physical distancing and infection control measures,
including wearing face coverings.

COVID-19 CHILDCARE FUNDING

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors allocated $15 million in CARES Act funding
for childcare vouchers to serve essential workers and low-income families in the County. The
Office for the Advancement of Early Care and Education is contracting with the Child Care
Alliance, a network of LA County Resource and Referral /Alternative Payment agencies, to
distribute vouchers.

Families seeking early care and education services may call 888-92-CHILD (888-922-4453).
Eligibility for these vouchers is set by the state.

At this time, Child Care Alliance are still in the process of implementing the program in partnership
with LA County. Interested families are encouraged to call Child Care Alliance and
provide contact information and zip code. The zip code will help them search their database
for a Resource and Referral agency, which is where they will forward the family’s information.
Once the program is implemented, a local Resource and Referral agency will reach out
to the families to provide further details.
