first Walk With The Mayor. 
The jaunt took the group along Sierra Madre Blvd. through Laurel and past Dapper 
Field, before stopping at Kersting Court.

LIBRARY 
IMPROVEMENTS 
Sierra Madre, CA. – July 1, 2022 
City Officials learned from Assembly Member 
Chris Holden’s Office (41st Assembly), that 
his Office successfully advocated an award to 
the City of Sierra Madre Public Library for $10 
million. 
In March of this year, Sierra Madre Mayor Gene 
Goss reached out to Assembly Member Hold-
en’s Office to request his assistance in obtainingState funding for Sierra Madre’s Library for the 
purpose of making meaningful improvements 
to the existing facility. Those improvements in-
volve: long-term building accessibility, seismic 
concerns, and increased space that includes an 
outdoor community area. 
The Sierra Madre Friends of the Library sup-
ported the award of $10 million, stating “The 
Sierra Madre Public Library building was built 
in 1955, and as such, has been pushed to its lim-
its of both space and deferred repairs. While 
there have been numerous efforts to address 
these concerns, funding has been a predomi-
nant obstacle to achieving these goals.” 
Library Board Trustee Rich Proctor stated, the 
Trustees are thrilled and grateful for AssemblyMember Holden’s hard work in facilitating a 
grant that will help the Library realize its full 
potential as the heart and soul of the Sierra 
Madre community” 
Said Mayor Goss, “the Library is one of our 
City’s treasures. It has been in need of major 
renovation and expansion for many years. The 
grant is a complete game-changer and will help 
make renovations possible. I wish to thank As-
sembly Member Holden for his tireless efforts 
on behalf of our City. It is a wonderful way to 
start the 4th of July weekend.” 
CHIEF RODRICK ARMALIN 
TO LEAVE SMPD 
As it has been said many times, “all good things must come to an end”, and unfortunately,
it seems that Sierra Madre’s time with Chief Rodrick Armalin has reached that point. After 
a very successful two years plus with SMPD, Armalin will move on to become the new 
Public Safety Director with the City of Lancaster. Armalin, who has a 34-year career in 
law enforcement, will move into a position in city administration heading up the Lancaster 
Public Safety Department’s team of Rangers, Code Enforcement Officers, and a new Hy-
brid Policing effort. 
Chief Armalin came to Sierra Madre in March 2020 at the beginning of the Pandemic, and 
has lead the city and department through the worst of times using his decades of experi-
ence in community policing to deal with the unique foothill village of Sierra Madre. 
He has brought more professionalism and diversity to the ranks of SMPD, developed cre-
ative programs for residents and the business community and led his officers by example in 
dealing the criminal element as well as other issues that are important to our town. 
Armalin has been a compassionate leader, going the extra mile to, for example, comfort a 
child who was frightened at even the sight of a police officer; assisting with efforts such as 
Sierra Madre Thrives during the pandemic; and even played Santa Claus during the 2020 
lockdown. 
In the aftermath of the pandemic with an increase in crime throughout the country, it is 
certain that Sierra Madre will miss Chief Armalin, however, as one resident said, “he’s leav-
ing our town in better shape than it was before”.
