POSITIVE TESTS CLIMB TO A HIGH OF OVER 14%
AS LA COUNTY CONTINUES TO EXPERIENCE
HIGH CASE AND HOSPITALIZATION NUMBERS

Public Health Reports 22 New Deaths and 9,473 New Positive Cases of
Con-firmed COVID-19 in Los Angeles County

This week, LA County reported continued high case numbers along with rising hospitalizations.
Most alarming is the increase in test positivity which has more than tripled since mid-
December, indicating surging transmission across the county.

With high rates of transmission, unfortunately, even those who are vaccinated can become
infected and infect others. And while the hope is that Omicron symptoms are milder, the current
rise in hospi-talizations is a cause for concern. Hospitalizations have increased by 30%
since last Tuesday; the alarming rise in hospitalizations follows an alarming increase in cases
last week.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) today released the latest
data on COVID-19.

• 9,473 new COVID-19 cases (1,632,893 cases to date)
• 22 new deaths due to COVID-19 (27,576 deaths to date)
• 966 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19
• More than 9,960,000 individuals tested; 15% of people tested positive

HOLIDAY BUBBLES PART 3

Fiction is sometimes better told then fact. The wine industry
is no exception. I am told German draft-dodger Jacob Schram
made camp in Calistoga in 1860 looking for a place to plant his
vines. One hundred sixty years later “Schramsberg” is producing
some of my all time favorite sparkling wines to this very day. Is
it good enough for me? It certainly was for Richard Nixon. In
1972, Barbara Walters hosted then-President Nixon and China’s
premier Zhou Enlai with it, and Schramsberg sparkling wine has
been served at state functions by every president (and yes, in the
Dills household) since the mid-eighties.

Sparkling wines are all blends and can be vintage, although
the Schramsberg Blanc de Noir is a composition of grapes and
regional combination. Blanc de Noir (meaning “white from
black”) is 85% pinot noir and 15% chardonnay - thus the blend

title - and that is just fine with this writer. With any “bubbles”
yeast plays an important role in the fermentation role of the wine’s richness and body, making
the wine crisp and low in tannins (The Monks found this out by accident). Many readers ask
me about sparkling wine or champagne storage. I buy champagne to drink right away, but if
you are able to purchase a six-pack to save a few dollars, that’s fine. This Schramsberg, if stored
properly, in a nice cool place bottle on it’s side, it will be good for years to come, but why let it
sit all alone when it should be enjoyed?

Yes, the holidays are here, and my research tells me that consumption of bubbles goes way up
during the holidays. This is not a picnic sparkling wine - this is one of my favorites and I savor
every zesty sip. Enjoy with a special friend, dinner, or a nice soft cheese.

Each week I will give you my Dills Score. I have added points for value. I’m starting with a base
of 50 points; I added 8 points for color, 8 points for aroma or “nose”, 8 points for taste, 9 points
for finish, and 8 points for my overall impression, which includes my value rating.

CONGRESSMAN SCHIFF ON RISING HATE
CRIMES IN L.A. COUNTY

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Adam
Schiff (D-Calif.) issued the following statement on
the L.A. County Commission on Human Relations
hate crimes report:

“I am deeply troubled by the unprecedented surge
in hate crimes in Los Angeles County. The rising
number of acts of violence against Black, Asian,
and LGBTQ+ Angelenos are horrifying, and tragically
mirror the awful mass shootings and targeted
attacks we have seen in Buffalo, Colorado Springs,
and other cities across the nation. I am also particularly
disturbed that Jewish Angelenos were victims
of an overwhelming number of the reli-giously-
motivated hate crimes, especially as antisemitic
vitriol has reached a fever pitch in recent weeks. As
this report shows, there is no room for silence or

ambivalence on these matters – we must all condemn bigotry and lies wherever we see
them, because the con-sequences of inaction are too great to bear.”

WHY IS FIRE SAFETY AROUND THE HOLIDAYS
IMPORTANT?

Every year, homes are lost and families are traumatized by tragic fire emergencies.
Many of these painful losses can be avoided with simple home prevention and preparation.
Post Alarm urges everyone to take the following preventative measures to keep
your home and family safe.

• Test and inspect your existing fire protection such as smoke detectors, heat sen-sors,
and carbon monoxide detectors. Remember that smoke detectors have effec-tive expiration
dates, we recommend replacing hardware every five years.
• Ensure all areas of your home are adequately protected and that all equipment communicates
its respective signals properly.
• Use only approved electrical lighting strings and appropriate and proper plugs and
extension cords.
• Use power strips that also have surge protectors, never plug a power strip into another
power strip, and only plug in as many cords as there are outlets for on the power
strip.
• Make sure you have fire extinguishing devices throughout your home to ensure
quick response and limit loss.
• Have and practice an emergency evacuation plan and a designated meeting loca-tion
that all family members know and can execute.
Monitored fire alarms increase safety for your family and home.
