WALKING SIERRA MADRE -

The Social Side by Deanne Davis

6-Day Forecast Sierra Madre, Ca.

“Step aside to a brand new day. In the month of May I feel I can
start again. Life is feeling new. This is hope, this is love, this is where
we all win.” Mychal Simka

“May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month
of hope," Emily Bronte

“We have to remember to be thankful! But in May one simply can’t
help being thankful that they are alive, if for nothing else.” L.M.
Montgomery

It’s May! There is so much to celebrate in this particular May that
we probably won’t be able to take time to think! The first thing
that comes to mind is that song from Camelot (the 1960 Lerner &
Lowe musical) that Guinevere warbles…

 “Tra la! It's May!

 The lusty month of May!

That lovely month when ev'ryone goes

 Blissfully astray.

 Tra la! It's here!

 That shocking time of year

When tons of wicked little thoughts

 Merrily appear!

 It's May! It's May!

 That gorgeous holiday

When ev'ry maiden prays that her lad

 Will be a cad!

 It's mad! It's gay!

 A libelous display!

Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes,

 Ev'ryone breaks.

 Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes

 The lusty month of May!”

Well, we’re probably not going to get that excited about it but
there’s so much in May to celebrate. The Art Fair! The featured
artist of the 60th Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair, sponsored by
the Friends of the Library, is a native Californian, Laura Wambsgans.
She embarked on her journey into landscape oil painting
nineteen years ago, following a successful tenure as the managing
director of a major recording studio and two decades as a sculptor.
Under the guidance of renowned artist Matt Smith and other
esteemed landscape painters, Wambsgans immersed herself in intensive
studies, painting daily to master the intricacies of capturing
the interplay of light and land through color and paint quality.

Trust me, friends and neighbors, you will want to be sure to bring
your checkbook. With 85 artists, food and entertainment, Memorial
Park is the place to be. The weather may cooperate and then
again, it may not, but don’t miss this really wonderful event. So
much creativity and talent for us to see, admire and, hopefully,
buy. It’s Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4 from 9:30 a.m.to

5. p.m.

After you’ve been through the Art Fair and you’re tired and hungry,
walk around and find yourself something good to eat: 355
Burger, Casa Del Rey, Corfu, Only Place in Town, Wistaria Restaurant
& Bar, and Mother Moo’s if you just simply need ice cream
to name just a few.

Mother’s Day is next weekend, May 11th, and I’m giving you advance
warning to order flowers, buy a card, make dinner reservations,
do something to celebrate your mom. More about that next
week.

The picture this week is a selection of May flowers, made possible
by our April showers.

My son’s birthday is May 12th. I’m just shamelessly using Walking
Sierra Madre…The Social Side to wish him a happy birthday.
Happy birthday, John! My May is loaded with birthdays and anniversaries
and I’m sure yours is, too. Enjoy each of these joyful
moments, friends and neighbors.

A couple of catch-up notes from last week’s Walking Sierra Madre:
being thankful for joyful things, I left out sunrises and sunsets.
Every day God puts up an awesome sunrise and a breathtaking
sunset. I’m thankful!

Catch-up item #2: The strawberry bread works really well with
thawed frozen strawberries.

I wanted to close with something neat…a quote from John
Lennon:

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness
was the key to life. When I went to school they asked me what
I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me
I didn’t understand the assignment. I told them they didn’t understand
life.”
