CITY (Continued from Page 1)

funded cities to purchase electric refuse trucks, install charging
stations at city yards, and even pilot electric police vehicles.

• The California Energy Commission (CEC) also funds
charging infrastructure through programs like CALeVIP (California
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project), which has provided
rebates for public charging stations in various regions.
In addition to state and federal programs, Sierra Madre can
leverage initiatives offered by our community choice energy
provider, Clean Power Alliance (CPA). CPA (which supplies
electricity to Sierra Madre) has launched an Energized Communities
program to help member cities decarbonize their
fleets and facilities.

Mayor Robert Parkhurst and the City Council addressed a few
concerns, including the fact that the city is over a year behind
in filing the necessary report to CARB and not having a plan
in place to complete a Municipal Fleet Electrification Plan.
Questions arose on whether staffing issues contributed to the
report never being filed by the April 1, 2024, deadline.

Lozick said the “silver lining” in all this is that Sierra Madre is
not alone in dealing with these issues, and many other cities
are in the same boat as they scramble to get into compliance
and face the threat of fines. He suggested that an alignment can
be made with other cities in the San Gabriel Valley to work together
to meet these requirements and capitalize on available
resources for funding and discounts.

The City Council decided to continue this item until the next
regular meeting to allow time to better understand what is required
to complete the CARB report and meet that compliance
first, then tackle the EV fleet and infrastructure needs
further down the line.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 27. I hope everyone is
amped up after the holiday.

SCAMS - (Continued from page 1)

If you get a call from an unknown caller trying to get you to
chat, give minimal information or just Hang Up. Scammers
can regenerate your voice from a 30 second sample.

Avoid overly friendly/charming matches on dating sites
especially if they are accompanied with a "hard luck" story
that may turn into a request for financial aid.

Check your credit card statements for reoccurring or one-
time charges that are unexplainable.

Stay current on scamming techniques by following fraud/
scam prevention sites. AARP, FBI, Los Angeles County are
some good sites to start with.

Identity Theft Protection software and programs exist and
may be worthwhile. They are outside of the scope of this article,
but may be worthy of your research and consideration.

Share what you know with three friends this week and ask
them to do the same. Let's teach each other how to avoid
getting scammed. Shared knowledge is our best protection.

I speak for free and hold group discussions on how to fight
scams. Please contact me at kstrubinski@yahoo.com if you
would like me to speak with your group. Also please contact
me if I have missed a scam technique here. I would like to
add it to my (sadly) ever growing list.

Be safe,

Weather Wise

May is certainly being an interesting month. The weather
was totally uncooperative for the Art Fair but brave Sierra
Madreans went anyway! Good for us! I happened to tune
into the Kentucky Derby on May 4th to see if Sierra Madre’s
own Triple Crown winning jockey, Victor Espinoza, might
be riding. He wasn’t. As you’ll recall, he won the Triple Crown
in 2015 riding American Pharoah. I had the opportunity to
interview Victor for the Mountain Views News after he won
the Triple Crown and what started out to be a “yes” or “no”
kind of interview turned into a magical time and Victor
came alive when he started talking about his attachment to
City of Hope. He donated 10% of his winnings to City of
Hope and I’m sure he’s still doing that. Anyway, the track
at Churchill Downs for the Derby was awash and mud was
so thick that you could hardly see winning jockey, Junior
Alvarado’s, face after he won on Sovereignty.

May is full of events! Birthdays, school ending for
granddaughters Jessie and Emily, anniversaries and
preparing for graduations in June.

I thought I’d take a look at all the other stuff we could be
celebrating this month and the list is endless!

We missed National Chocolate Parfait Day, Cinco de Mayo,
Save the Rhino Day and National No Pants Day. We did
celebrate Mother’s Day and I still have flowers and cards up
on my kitchen island from my wonderful family.

Looking forward…

May 17 – Learn to swim day, National Pack Rat Day,
National Walnut Day, Plant a Lemon Tree Day. World Fiddle
Day and World Whiskey Day, just to name a few.

May 18 – National Cheese Souffle Day, National Visit
Your Relatives Day, National No Dirty Dishes Day, World
Baking Day, and Emergency Medical Services Day.

May 19 – Malcolm X Day, National Devil’s Food Cake
Day, Plant Something Day and National Family Doctor Day.

May 20 – Eliza Doolittle Day, International Red
Sneaker Day, National Be a Millionaire Day (let’s all get
in on that one!), National High Heel Day, National Pick
Strawberries Day, National Rescue Dog Day, World Bee Day
and National Quiche Lorraine Day.

May 21 – Eat More Fruits and Vegetables Day,
International Tea Day, National Memo Day, National
Talk Like Yoda Day, National Waitstaff Day and World
Meditation Day. I could
go on like this for the rest
of the month but all these
celebrations will leave us
exhausted and begging for
National Nap and Peace
and Quiet Day.

In honor of Plant a Lemon
Tree Day, the picture this
week is one painted by
my Dad some years ago of
lemons during the Jurassic
period. Also, in honor of
Plant a Lemon Tree Day,
here is a

recipe I tried this week
that is terrific:

Whole Lemon Blender Bread

Preheat oven to 350, spray a 9 x 5 loaf pan with baking spray.
I used the 9 x 5 and also a small pan as I didn’t want lemon
batter all over my oven.

1 very large (or 2 or 3 smaller) lemons

 1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup canola or vegetable oil

1/3 cup sour cream (I used a small vanilla yogurt as I
didn’t have sour cream)

 2 large eggs

 1 tsp. lemon extract

 2 cups all-purpose flour

 2-1/2 tsp. baking powder

 ½ tsp. kosher salt

Gather all ingredients, trim and discard lemon ends, cut into
wedges and remove seeds. Place first 6 ingredients in your
blender, puree them, then add the rest of the ingredients.
Process until a smooth, thick batter is formed. Scrape down
sides frequently. Pour into prepared pan and bake 50-55
minutes till that good old toothpick comes out clean. Let
it cool in the pan for about 20 minutes then spread a little
butter on a slice and enjoy!

Look forward to May 26th – Memorial Day, National
Blueberry Cheesecake Day, National Paper Airplane Day,
National Sorry Day and World Dracula Day. The fun never
ends!!
