Sierra Madre Veteran Ken Anhalt, 102, Passes Away On Thursday, March 12th, Sierra Madre lost another Treasure. Ken, was an outstandingSierra Madre community leader and volunteer and was just bestowed with the US Centennial Coin in November for his outstanding service to America. The honor was awarded the prestigious Centennial Coin for his service as a B24 Liberator Gunner with over 22 flight missions in the US Army Air Corp during World War II. (below) The U.S. Secretary of Veteran Affairs Douglas A. Collins noted in his written acknowledgement of Ken, "You are a part of this country's 'Greatest Generation' for your legacy of patriotism and honor." Ken died a few weeks short of his 103rd birthday. Born on April 6, 1923 Ken was the first of two Children from the union of Cecil and Emma Anhalt. Ken was born in New York City on April 6, 1923. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley whom he in 1939 at 17 years old and little did they know they would be married on November 23, 1947. Their marriage lasted almost 77 years; they knew each other for 84 years. From this union came two children. Ken leaves his son Edward (Cheryl) and daughter Lisa (Adam). Ken was blessed with three grandchildren: Justin Aaron (Suzanne), Heather Carla, Jordan Colby and two great grandchildren, Ava Rose and Aaron Jacob. He adored his family. Ken and Shirley moved to Sierra Madre in 1958 where they raised their family and lived the rest of their lives. Ken served the community through his service to the Kiwanis Club, and his membershipin the Sierra Madre Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 3208. He served on the Sierra Madre Police Commission and was given the Senior Member of the Year Award by Los Angeles CountySupervisor Michael Antonovich and numerous other awards for his community service. He was a long-time congregant of Temple Beth David in Temple City. Ken was known for his patriotism to our country and his service as a World War II combat veteran flying as a tail gunner on B-24s in both the 8th and 15th Air Forces flying out of Halesworth, England and Cerignola, Italy. He served in the Army Air Corp from 1943-1945. He flew 28 missions during this time flying against Nazi-occupied Europe and Germany and was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters amongst other honors. Because he received many battle stars, he was eligible for an early discharge at the end of the war. He attended Pasadena City College where he obtained his AA and California State University, Los Angeles where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree. He spent his career working in the Aerospace Industry. His last assignment was at the Jet Propulsion Lab where he worked for 25 years. He declared this was his favorite job. He and his wife Shirley were lifelong Dodger fans, and his children have fond memories of going to Chavez Ravine and in the end watching them on TV. "Dad wanted to see the Dodgers achieve their 3rd back to back World Series, but he didn’t make it." The family wishes to recognize the following caregivers who were loving, caring and compassionate to Ken in his last years of life: Gary, Cristina, Areceli, Nieves, Johanna, Bernadette and LaShonda.
