Recipe of the Week:

Garlic Shrimp Linguini

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound uncooked linguine

1 tablespoon butter

3 tablespoons white wine

2 teaspoons grated Parmesan cheese

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley salt and

 pepper to taste

1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

DIRECTIONS:

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil.
Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al
dente; drain.

In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium
low heat; add wine, cheese, garlic, parsley and salt
and pepper to taste. Simmer over low heat for 3 to
5 minutes, stirring frequently.

Increase heat to medium high and add shrimp
to skillet; cook for about 3 to 4 minutes or until
shrimp begins to turn pink. Do not overcook.

 Divide pasta into portions and spoon sauce on top;
garnish with Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley, if
desired.

Mindfulness, the moment to moment
process of being aware of what we are
doing, thinking and feeling, is currently
the focus of numerous research studies,
including many funded by the National
Center for Complementary and
Alternative Medicine. Why are these
studies of so much interest, one may
wonder?

For many of us, our inner workings are
much like a runaway train. Agitation,
worry, anger, isolation, fatigue and
anxiety are the principal actors on our
inner stage, a veritable improv. These
thoughts, feelings and actions create
a physiology that leads to exhaustion.
By establishing the presence of a calm,
nonjudgmental, attentive self (picture a
kind, compassionate and wise creative
director sitting in the audience) our
mindscape is altered and high levels of stress hormones are reduced.

If reducing stress and developing peace of mind are not enough, how about the bottom line?
Raytheon? Bose? Harvard Law School? Federal prisons? LAPD? Hospitals? All have
provided training in mindfulness.

The best thing about mindfulness is that it is free. No prescription drugs, no travel, no long
hours of study, no expenses for new wardrobes, no money to join: nothing but awareness.
In fact, I feel a bit guilty in writing about it, kind of like selling you your own car! If this is
new to you, consider exploring the concept on line (google Mindfulness), and if it’s old hat,
consider these words a friendly reminder.

Finally, next week we will discuss a few practices which help reduce stress and anxiety. Here
is one to utilize this week: When you first get into your car, the initial response might be
to turn on the radio. Instead, take a few breaths, be aware of yourself and enjoy the quiet.
Gently resist the urge to reach for the radio as you go about your business, instead breathing
and being awake to what your are doing, feeling and thinking.

Have a great week! Dr. John

Dr. John Talevich, D.C. has practiced in Sierra Madre
for thirty years. His clinic, LifeWorks! Chiropractic,
offers patient-specific approaches to the alleviation
of pain and individually tailored wellness programs.
