St. Rita Parish Welcomes
New Director of Youth
Ministry
On November 7, St. Rita Parish in
Sierra Madre welcomed a new member to
the professional ministry staff, Theresa Bui
Costanzo. Involved with youth ministry for
fifteen years, Costanzo comes to St. Rita’s
via her former profession in international
marketing in the health and beauty care
industry.
In her years as a UCLA student, she
formed a strong bond to campus ministry
in the Newman Center at the university,
then as a young adult was involved with the
youth program at St. Philip the Apostle in
Pasadena. After starting a family, she was
called to youth ministry, and served as
Director of Youth Ministry at Our Mother
of Good Counsel in Los Angeles and
Confirmation coordinator in La Canada-
Flintridge at St. Bede parish.
As a mother of two, the Altadena resident
feels she balances a practical, sympathetic
and empathetic feel for parents who
are juggling schedules and trying to set
priorities amidst all of the multitasking
demands of today’s life. “Yet,” she says, “It
is important to both me and my husband
that we be involved in ministry, especially
youth.”
Monsignor Richard Krekelberg, pastor of
St. Rita’s says he and the interview team
were drawn to Costanzo’s passion for the
Catholic Christian faith, her dynamic
enthusiasm and particularly her success at
recruiting and developing a dynamic youth
ministry team, “whose mission is to provide
a faith-filled community for Catholic youths
to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus
Christ and become truly connected with
the church through the relationship they
develop and participation in their parish
community” in Costanzo’s own words.
“The development of our ministry to
youth here at St. Rita Parish over the
past four years,” reflected Krekelberg,
“has impressed upon us the need to
include programming for junior high,
high school (including preparation for
the sacrament of Confirmation) through
young adult. From the more than twenty
applicants for the position of Director of
Youth Ministry, Theresa Bui Costanzo
clearly had the edge by way of previous
experience and success in tying all three
levels together in a seamless way.”
Costanzo will direct an expanded youth
ministry program planned for grades
6-12 over the next year, as well as the two
year Confirmation program. Monsignor
Richard Krekelberg, pastor, will
complete her introduction to the church
community this Saturday, November 20 at
the 5:30 Youth Mass, after introductions at
all the church’s other services and the semi-
annual parish welcome event, earlier in
November.

programs, contact Theresa Costanzo at

A DAY AT CITY HALL Photos by Vivianne M. Parker
Students from Highpoint Academy in Pasadena
get a tour of Pasadena City Hall as Councilman
Steve Haderlein who covers District 4 (Hastings
Ranch area and East Pasadena) shares the
history of Pasadena’s unique architecture seen
in buildings like City Hall, the Rose Bowl, and
the Convention Center.
The center quad is a well-photographed
scene with wedding photographers often
framing their shots and models near this
fountain. City Hall was built in 1928 in
this Roman architecture style.
Students got an opportunity to see what the
8 member council view when sessions are
held there as they
hear the matters of the city at its weekly
meetings.
Haderlein explains the design of the time
in 1928 where candle lights were being replaced
by electric lights so the concept was
to make the new products look like the old
product.
