INGREDIENTS:

Most of us know about the benefits
of probiotics, those friendly bacteria
that inhabit the digestive tract. Did you
know there are also digestive support
agents that are equally important, known
as “prebiotics”? These are soluble plant
and fruit fibers that serve as food for the
acidophilus and bifidus bacteria.

Why is this so important? In the
simplest of terms, there is competition in
the intestine between some 400 organisms.
Most of these bacteria, viruses, and fungus
(yes, fungus) have learned to live together
for the benefit of all and for the host (us).
As a matter of course, there are times when
certain types become more dominant and
may cause irritation directly or through
the waste that they produce. Hopefully,
there will be a restoration of balance by
way of a healthy immune response, and
through the introduction of foods which
favor healthy bacterial colonies. Over-
consumption of high fats, sugar, red meat, and other foods which can promote inflammation
directly, or through fermentation and putrefaction, will contribute to an imbalance of
bacteria in the colon.

Some simple solutions to balancing the digestive tract include the use of probiotics
that can be helpful in inoculating the intestinal tract. These can be purchased at health
food stores and pharmacies in capsules. Such supplements offer billions of organisms per
serving and are specifically designed to be used in the human digestive tract. Additionally, a
supplement consisting of inulin, oligosaccharides, and oligofructosaccharides can be taken
along with the probiotic bacteria to support their growth. Foods that are high in prebiotics
include bananas, berries, asparagus, barley, wheat, oatmeal, flax seed, tomatoes, Jerusalem
artichokes, onions, legumes, and greens.

Because digestive efficiency is important for every body function, the benefits of pro and
prebiotics are a given. Disorders such as allergies, candida, digestive distress and chronic
inflammation can benefit from these as well. Prolonged use of antibiotics also creates a need
for inoculation with pre- and probiotics.

Have a healthy week! Dr. John

1 pound fresh asparagus

1 (16 ounce) package egg noodles

4 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

1 cup butter

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 pound medium shrimp - peeled and deveined

1 pound fresh mushrooms, thinly sliced

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

In a small saucepan, boil or steam asparagus in
enough water to cover until tender; chop and set
aside.

Bring a large pot of salted water to full boil, place
the pasta in the pot and return to a rolling boil;
cook until al dente. Drain well.

In a large saucepan, saute garlic in the olive oil
over medium-low heat until the garlic is golden
brown.

Place butter and lemon juice in the saucepan.
Heat until the butter has melted. Place
the shrimp in the saucepan and cook until the
shrimp turns pink. Place the mushrooms and
asparagus into the saucepan, cook until mushrooms
are tender.

Toss the shrimp and vegetable mixture with the
egg noodles and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

SOCIAL SECURITY
SURVIVORS
BENEFITS
EXPLAINED

The loss of a loved one can
be painful. The death of a
wage-earner upon whom a
family depends also can be
financially devastating.

If you’re like most young or
middle-aged workers, you
probably think of Social
Security only as a retirement
program. But some of the
Social Security taxes you
pay go toward providing
survivors insurance for
workers and their families.
Think of it as a life insurance
policy you never knew you
had — paid for by the same
taxes that cover you for
retirement or disability.

When you die, certain
members of your family
may be eligible for survivors
benefits. These include
widows, widowers (and
divorced widows and
widowers), children, and
even dependent parents.
In many cases, there also
is a one-time lump-sum
payment of $255 that can be
made to a surviving spouse
or minor children who meet
certain requirements.

You may not think it will
happen to you, but the
stunning truth is that one
in eight of today’s 20-year-
olds will die before reaching
their full retirement age of
67. In fact, 98 of every 100
children could get benefits if
a working parent dies. More
than 6.4 million survivors
receive benefits. The average
Survivors benefit is $1,129 a
month.

If you are a survivor, you
should apply for survivors
benefit right away. You can
apply by telephone or at any
Social Security office. Call us
toll-free at 1-800-772-1213
(TTY: 1-800-325-0778). To
help prepare you, here is the
information we will need:

• Proof of death —
either from a funeral home
or a death certificate;

• Your Social Security
number, as well as the
deceased worker’s;

• Your birth certificate;

• Your marriage
certificate, if you are a
widow or widower;

• Your divorce papers,
if you are applying as
a divorced widow or
widower;

• Dependent children’s
Social Security numbers,
if available, and birth
certificates;

• Deceased worker’s
W-2 forms or Federal self-
employment tax return for
the most recent year; and

• The name of your
bank and your account
number so your benefits
can be deposited directly
into your account.

survivors benefits, please
